We’re on a diesel drag racing kick here lately. It was only the other day that we told you about John Robinson’s completely awesome Cummins powered altered and showed you video of the beast running down in Texas. Today we have a video that ace BS contributor Charles Wickam tipped us off to. This footage was taken at one of our favorite drag strips in the world, Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Kentucky. While it sounds weird to say, Beech Bend is a big spot for diesel drag racing and a couple of significant diesel meets are held there each year. We’re not sure if this video was taken at one of those meets or on a test day of some sort. Either way, the track sure was hooking hard!
We have no technical information about the truck but we can tell you that this is a early 1980s Chevy and the powerplant is a highly modified and worked up Cummins engine. We’re not sure we have actually seen a diesel drag pickup every pull a wheelie like this. You have to consider the massive weight of the engine along with a bunch of other factors, but this is a stunning piece of work for this truck. The violence of the launch is also impressive and that makes us really want to know what kind of transmission is in the truck and who built it because that’s really the one piece of the driveline that is getting punished the hardest. This wheelstand is a great illustration of torque as the truck is not only climbing the ladder but it is also trying to corkscrew itself!

I love the idea of an oil-burner hot rod. I just wish they’d plumbed the exhaust out the back or side, that way when the tires hook up, you’d have the black and white smoke!

I need that transmission in my Ram. Cummins seem to eat transmissions when beat on
