This is flipping nuts. Hyundai Heavy Industries has completed the construction on a piece of equipment called the Hyundai 10,000 which is a 10,000 ton capacity heavy lift vessel that will be used in the construction of massive off-shore oil and gas rigs as best we can tell. This thing is incredible in every way. The ship measures 546ft long, 210ft wide, and it is 33ft in “depth”. We’re not sure if that means it takes 33ft of water to keep it from smashing into the bottom or some other measurement but it is large and in charge. The height of the booms was not given but they are pretty majestic from any angle you look at it.
The cost on construction was not given but the company did say that it will save them 21 million dollars PER YEAR in construction costs on their myriad of big projects. We have to guess that it will be use for many more than 10 years because costs logically have to be a half billion dollars or somewhere in that ball park. The vessel will be used on at least 19 projects at this point and probably many more as others come online. Just awesome.
Not to go full Debbie Downer on everyone but when was the last time a machine like this was produced in an American shipyard? We hope that we’re wrong and it was last week or something but we have a feeling that the answer is not that simple. It would be cooler if it were made here but the fact that someone schemed this one up and it is now a “real thing” is a pretty wild testament to the human ability to create solutions to even our biggest challenges.
Thanks for the tip Tyler Garrett!
