In 1967 The GMC Advertising Department Apparently Lost Their Minds – Watch Three Weird Truck Ads

There have been plenty of weird, quizzical, and downright strange car commercials over the years but the GMC advertising department or agency really cornered the market in 1967. We’re not sure who was signing off on this stuff but we do know that you don’t see a whole lot of ads patterned off of the three you will see below. Unique they all are but good they aren’t (at least in our opinion). From a gun battle with robbers to a Sigmund Freud knock off to a slightly uncomfortable family that doesn’t make any sense, we’re just not seeing the brilliance here. Are you?

The first ad would never, ever fly in today’s world. Basically you have robbers running out of a bank an into a waiting 1947 Buicks…yes, these ads were made in 1967 and the robbers are in a ’47 Buick. A cop stops the truck, jumps in and the civilian driver and the cop proceed to chase the bad guys with the bullets flying. At one point the cop tells the driver to “watch out for bullets”. That’s sound advice but again, in today’s world this one would never make it to air.

The second one features the high pitched and overly accented voice of the psychotherapist who does a fine job telling us about the features of the truck in a voice that makes you want to strangle him dead. Yes, it is more unique than having a deeply voiced person just tell you about the features but who in the hell was this ad targeted to? Truck customers in 1967 don’t strike us as the types of “get” this one.

Lastly we have the strangest one of the bunch. It is a typical American family of the day with a dad that is acting purposefully uncomfortable and awkward while his family gathers in the picture. This one is promoting camper ready versions of the GMC truck and it left us confused. Perhaps he was just mimicking how uncomfortable he’d be after couple days in that tin can with this family!

I don’t what you are talking about, Brian. These commercials are exactly why I bought my ’67 GMC……… maybe not.

Well the plate did read 1967 BUT those are 1968 trucks. 67 had the small rear window. In 68 they came with the full size window.

You could order a 1967 GMC or Chevy truck with the large back window! Not all of gen had the small window!
