It Screams: A Twin-Engined Rotary Pulling Tractor From Australia!

It Screams: A Twin-Engined Rotary Pulling Tractor From Australia!

Pulling tractors…what engine comes to mind? A stonkin’ diesel with compound turbos? Five alcohol-swilling Hemis that are just barely on the verge of sanity? Three turbines? All good choices. But what about using two Mazda twin-rotary Wankel engines? Yeah, we hadn’t thought of that either, and for good reason: while a 13B can make good power, it’s horsepower. Rotaries aren’t known for their torque, so even when boosted up they would be at a disadvantage compared to a Mini-modified tractor that might be running a more potent small-block Chevrolet. But Bob Blackwell isn’t concerned…after twenty-something years at the game, his tractor, “Rotary Hoe”, is pretty much dialed in. The twin rotaries work well together, pushing the power through a Mazda JATCO automatic and out of a Ford 9-inch rear axle, and while it isn’t the greatest torque machine, having a softer launch might actually be helping the program along, keeping Rotary Hoe from spinning tires during a pull. Something about age and treachery is afoot here…
