Monster Truckin’ Time Machine: 1980s Monster Truck Action From Oklahoma – Leaf Sprung Grave Digger!

Monster Truckin’ Time Machine: 1980s Monster Truck Action From Oklahoma – Leaf Sprung Grave Digger!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Yet another installment for the series.  About half the pictures from this event (2-day) did not come out well enough to bring into the fold.  Nonetheless we have some interesting shots from some of the best names in the business at the time.  One of my personal favorites, No Problem, was showing of its fairly-new incarnation with a stretched body and a slightly different approach to the suspension.  Jon Moore always put on a good show and this event was no exception.

Dennis Anderson had the last leaf-sprung Grave Digger there wowing the crowd as was the Witch Doctor driven by Jeff Bursey.  Rumor has it this chassis was the old Little Bearfoot.  Marvin Smith was airing out his Wild Hare Chevy with Jessie Birgy’s Playin For Keeps doing much the same.  Bob Breen was mixing it up with the Micro Machines monster as Nick Rossi showed off the fresh Jersey Outlaw Ford.

I cannot find any information about the Viper-named Ford that was hanging well with all the other trucks.  Since it’s been many, many years my memory won’t let me recall who it was.  Maybe someone that sees this will know.  I miss the old-style monster trucks, but like any motorsport there must be progress.  I’d certainly like to see a series or shows feature these older rigs.  Enjoy!

The Ozark Viper Ford was a Breen Boys truck. It started life as Jon’s Stomper Bully and was then rebuilt into the Green Wild Hair truck which Bob Breen drove from 88-89. Then it was repainted as Whisky Business, which Ken Deppe drove and then went through a couple of incarnations of the Ozark Viper. It is now yellow and called Jumpin’ For Jesus.
