Red Bull Frozen Rush 2015: Flying Trucks During Qualifying At The Neatest Short Course Truck Race In The World

Red Bull Frozen Rush 2015: Flying Trucks During Qualifying At The Neatest Short Course Truck Race In The World

Well, the first day of public coolness at Red Bull Frozen Rush 2015 was pretty awesome. Yes, it was -15 degrees as Nutting and I were blasting photos of 900hp four wheel drive trucks hauling tail in the snow, but there was a great contingent of fans that braved the cold to take in the action. Thursday was qualifying day for the main event which will be taking place on Friday at mid-day. There will be live streaming video of the event at RedBull.com and working to have it here on BangShift. Qualifying was awesome to watch because we got to see each of the trucks make solo runs around the course in a desperate effort to nab the best lap time. As this race will be run in a drag race ladder format, it was important to qualify well and Red Bull Frozen Rush 2014 champion Ricky Johnson grabbed the top qualifying spot with an effort of just over a minute and a half.

Below you will see photos that Lohnes shot of trucks coming over the “step up” jump which represents the finish line and trucks flying across the 50ft “gap jump” that is on the backside of the course. How fast are these things on snow? The course was so grippy because of the 600+ studs in the BFG tires combined with the fact that the snow had basically been turned into hard packed ice, that these guys were actually running out of gear which equates to over 90mph! We can only imaging the insanity that will occur tomorrow when two of these things are flying, bashing, and smashing into each other at high speeds around the snow track.

All signs point to this being a really fun deal tomorrow so stay tuned to see all of our Red Bull Frozen Rush 2015 coverage! Oh, the big bonus? It will be 20 degrees on Friday!
