This 1975 Dodge 700 Is a Rare Beast, An Ugly Beast, And A Cheap Beast

This 1975 Dodge 700 Is a Rare Beast, An Ugly Beast, And A Cheap Beast

I have to thank McTaggart for the tip on this one as he found it and shared it to my Facebook page. Seconds later I engaged my wife in a discussion about how fun it would be to fly to Oregon, buy this dump truck, and drive home as a couple. Just some us time, you know? I noticed that she began sharpening the knives about halfway through my sales pitch so I abandoned that idea and will hope that someone else can score this really neat truck for the really short asking price that it is listed at.

Many people forget that Dodge was a player in the medium and heavy duty truck segment right up into the 1970s. They made the awesome Big Horn tractors that are coveted by enthusiasts and collectors today. They also made lots of stuff like this 700 dump truck. This thing is a total steal and while the photos aren’t the best, for $1,500 bucks you get a running, driving 1975 truck with fresh brakes, a gas V8 engine (we’re guessing a 361?) that’s hooked to a five speed (likely a Clark) and a two speed rear axle. The seller lists the body as being straight and the floors as being good. Outside of minor rust it is a real solid piece. The truck has not been used for a few years and apparently the clutch needs to be tuned but for $1,500?! I sincerely wish I lived nearer to score this rig.

The styling of the 1975 Dodge 700 is interesting. You can see that it uses the truck cab from the cowl back but the nose is all different. Look closely at the photo either above or directly below, especially the area just next to the grill. Notice something? Yes, the whole thing is a big piano hinge. When it comes time to work on the truck the fenders hinge out like wings and give the guy working virtually unfettered access to the engine and front end. Just one of the neat features here.

Anyway, if you buy this please do not tell me. I’m already heartbroken that it cannot be mine.

It is orange and would fit in with my current fleet of trucks. Fortunately, it’s a mopar and quite easily ignored.

…and then looking into it more, I could be wrong. From http://www.allpar.com/old/fargo.html re; the Fargo version: “Yet, in 1960, the 1958 cab was taken and given new swing-away fenders that were not too pretty, but very practical. This basic C-O-E offering remained unchanged, except for headlights, until Chrysler pulled out of the heavy truck business in 1975”.

      Hmm.

    What about a gasser truck?

Put in a blown early Hemi on digitised shotgun Hilborn injection, hike up that front end and lose some of the weight. Then convert it to a flat bed with a large Moon tank, then unleash it on a drag strip.

    Dare to be different rules!

My old boss bought one just like this back in about 71(no, I don’t remember what year it was). Detroit Diesel, 5X4, tandem axle, 12 yard box. POS. Always broke down. Cab was cramped, hot, noisy.

Theres a big difference between the D700 and the C700. This truck appears to be a C series, with the big truck cab and nose, not the D700 which seemed to use the same basic cab as a pickup. http://www.olddodges.com/cseries.htm. They say this style went from 1960 up til the end, in 1975. Or 1977 for some export and military trucks.
