This 1979 Dodge Aspen Sunrader Is Weird, Crazy, and Impossibly Slow

This Craigslist ad has been keeping the internet occupied for a couple of days and for good reason. You are looking at one of the most bizarre vehicular mashups anyone has ever seen. Basically it is a 1979 Dodge Aspen, powered by a 225ci “Super Six” version of the slant six engine that has been mated to a Sunrader mini-RV. There are a lot of theories about how this was done floating around but we think we have the correct answer.

Sunraders were almost exclusively set on the little weird Toyota one ton trucks of the day. You remember the ones. They were low slung, had a dually axle under them and were sold as a cab and chassis from the factory. Used as flatbeds and all manner of things, they made a decent platform for the RV because of their chassis and underpinnings. They had a naturally aspirated four cylinder engine which may be the only thing in the world that makes less power than the engine that powers the thing now.

The Aspen being a unibody car, we’re betting that the truck frame rail stubs were used and integrated into the floor of the car with some channels or by some other method. Being that the camper was originally motivated by that weenie little four banger, the dualie rear axle surely has some steep gears in it and that has to be helping the slant six move this whole rig around.

The top speed may be about 60mph and it probably climbs hills at 24mph but the 110hp and 180 lb-ft that the six generates has to be more stout that the original motorvation.

Heck, this may be the first time in history that a slant six was a power upgrade!

What a basis for the World’s Ultimate Sleeper – fit a blown Hellcat Hemi and thoroughly upgrade the brakes and suspension. Then go out haunting the highways for supercars to race. Can you imagine some rich dork in his Lambo with a rent-a-broad in the passenger seat being totally blown away by the world’s ugliest RV. The dumb ass would think he had stopped and would open the window door step out whilst doing 150mph and leave a nice long smelly slick on the asphalt allowing the rent-a-broad to jack his wheels allowing her to rid herself of the shackles of despair.

Shit that should be a film script – now where’s Martin Scorses’s phone number?

I’d like to think the guy in the Aspen backed into him…shot the Toyota out the back like a giant turd and then just drove off.
