What would it take to put a hydraulic excavator into the back of a rail car? A crane? That would be nice, sure, but what if you’re in the middle of nowhere? When the excavator is the biggest thing next to the train itself, then it’s time to get creative. That is what the driver of this Cat was facing when he had to unload a railcar filled with crushed rock. So in lieu of a lifting apparatus or a simple ramp, the Cat’s driver takes the basic approach of climbing the excavator up and onto the railcar. We’re pretty sure that OSHA wasn’t anywhere near this worksite, because if a safety inspector had seen this going on heads would’ve rolled (or possibly exploded), but there is no denying that the operator has some skills. We hope he’s just as skillful in getting the Cat out of the car once he’s done…gravity isn’t going to be his friend.
