We’ve all seen the video of the pulling tractor pitching it’s block over the side of the frame rails and then running it over. It was the king of the carnage hill for years, but there’s a new king in town! Also footage of a tractor exploding, this one launches the engine, not just out of the frame, but nearly out of the roof of the building the machine was running in!
According to BangShift member Truckpuller, the engine was a highly modified International DT466 diesel which had been converted to run on alcohol. The motor was equipped with four superchargers and made upwards of 200lbs of boost! In looking at the video after the engine goes Chernobyl, the lower half is still in the tractor while the rest of the mill lands next to the machine on the track. You can actually see pistons still attached to the crank laying on their sides.

I read these “best” or “greatest ever” with a great deal of cynicism because most fail to deliver. This one, however, is certainly within the top 5. It fails to be “greatest” because there were no secondary explosions.

Certainly one of the all-time biggies in pulling. A couple of details, though. It’s only got 3 turbos in 2 pressure stages and nowhere near 200lbs. of boost. Alky engines have detonation trouble above 85 psi. The stock straight-6 ag blocks are notorious for failing at the cam centerline, this is another. Regs have tightened up a bit in recent years to keep such a failure from leaving the chassis here in the US.
Detonation is not a problem on alky, but pre-ignition (from too lean fuel mixture) is. Also 3 stage turbo setups can produce 350+ PSI of boost.
Engine explosions are really and awesome sight. Except when that engine is on your grandyoungin’s Jr. Dragster.
Having an engine launch like a rocket into the air is something I’d rather see in a video than actually witnessing!
