We know that tons of you out there love old campers and motorhomes. We also know that lots of you like freaky stuff and this 1963 Corvair van fits the bill on both accounts. For starters it is a pretty rare Corvair 95 van that it is running and driving shape. The seller claims that the only real issue is that the brakes pull to the left when they are applied. The engine (as you will see in the photos below) looks to be in fine order and it isn’t even all caked in junk like you’d expect from the otherwise weathered exterior of the van. The real kicker about this thing is the fact that it is a Dormobile camper conversion. There are like four of these known to exist in North America…period. The Dormobile company is still very much in business over in England and that’s where they have always been, converting trucks and vans into small campers for people to take on “holiday”.
The Dormobile people had a brainstorm that turned out to be sheer brilliance in the fact that they recognized that there were tradesman working all over the country with vans and those guys needed a cheap way to get away from it all for a couple of days here and there. It was from that idea that they developed their expanding roof and some of the modular furniture and appliances used in the conversions. This one has a cool feature in that the front seats fold into a bed. The roof has a skylight and a vent and in some of the photos you can see what the “kitchen table” looks like folded out and ready to serve the trout you just caught and grilled up over the fire.
The van itself seems to be in remarkable shape as the floors are really clean and outside of the necessary patina on the outside, all looks really good. The chrome and trim are in good shape, the windows look good, etc. This is definitely one that requires a special buyer and someone who is really in love with the idea of roughing it 1960s style but we dig it and hope that someone gets it, restores it, and actually uses it out in the wilderness again!
