All forms of motorized competition are about evolution in one way or another. Drag racers constantly try to go quicker and faster within the confines of their rules and track lengths, stock car racers are always trying to do the same under even more heavily scrutinized rules, and Formula One? Hell, that’s the space race with wheels. The same type of logic applies to stuff even as off the beaten path as rock bouncing but the stakes for the rock guys are a LOT higher than the dude in a stock eliminator car trying to crack into the 12s.

What do we mean? This video is a perfect example of the point we’re making. See, the only way you evolve with a deal like rock bouncing is to build more capable, powerful, well engineered trucks which then require crazier, steeper, taller, more intense obstacles to climb in order for things to keep moving down the same path. So instead of a driver having to brake a little earlier going into a turn because he has a more powerful car, the rock bouncing guys have to build vehicles which have to protect a driver from what amounts to a crash off the top of a five story parking garage. Ask Bobby Tanner, the guy driving this buggy and he’ll tell you!

As you will see, Tanner takes a couple of easy passes at the hill, known as “UnderRated” before deciding to give his small block Chevy powered rig the ol’ “what for” and when he does the thing vaults itself right up to the top of what looks like a canyon ridge but instead of carrying the momentum up and over the top, the thing just goes vertical and lands on the cliff face…this is not good for Bobby Tanner.  The rig endos a couple of times on its way to a hard landing at the bottom. Pay attention to the massive rear coil over shock exploding and spewing oil everywhere as it comes apart and how fracked up the steering is when they are dragging the whole works away with a front end loader. This was a real deal wreck and the machine did keep its driver safe, which is the main thing it was intended to do.

Of course, the natural question centers around where all of this will stop. Not that we are saying it should but how high can these guys go? How safe can you build something for a guy to live through a fall even worse than this? There was a time that scientists said that no drag racing car would ever go over 180mph in a quarter of a mile. Therefore we’re not saying that there’s any limitation to what these guys can do in the future. We’ll be watching from the other ridge…
