1978 Oldsmobile Starfire Mirage – This Should Not Exist, But It Does

1978 Oldsmobile Starfire Mirage – This Should Not Exist, But It Does

“Starfire Mirage”. If I hadn’t been looking directly at the nose of an H-body Oldsmobile, I would’ve suspected that I was about to see the newest cartoon character from one of those weird Japanese cartoon films that you only really see playing in comic book stores. I know what the Olds Starfire is: a Chevrolet Monza with a slightly tweaked nose cone, the end. I know what a Mirage bodykit is, a bundle of flares and spoilers that Michigan Auto Techniques applied for GM to Monzas to give them that IMSA-ish feel.

Officially, Oldsmobile did not play the same game. The Starfire was meant to be a sporty yet upmarket car, a subcompact that made the Omega seem roomy by comparison. It was not meant to roll around in full disco pimp attire. So seeing one with flares and all is a bit jarring, especially when you get to the gold stripes outlined in red. At first glance, this could have very well been a special, themed similar to the Mirage and the Buick Skyhawk Nighthawk and it’s retroreflective stripe kit. But this is a custom…a dealership had the body kit installed, had the stripes applied and sprung for the very funky wheels, which look like Auto Drags at first, but instead are something I’ve never seen before.

The kit isn’t pretty. It’s chunky and fitment around the nose is bad. And the wheels look super-tiny, even though they are period correct. What do you think…is it a good throwback or a bad flashback?

Already gone. Had a Monza briefly, fun little car. Yeah, that kit is clunky, but I’d rock it!

I have an ugly car. It\’s a 1977 firebird Skybird , it was my deceased mother\’s car. Rip mom. It\’s cosmetically perfect but doesn\’t run. Been in a garage for 43 years. If anyone wants it let me know, the honeycomb wheels are awesome . Best offer it\’s in Oregon

Looks like some kid tried to make a hotrod out of dads car with a pair of cissors and cardboard. Its makes you happy the 80s are over.

I think it\’s a cool little car , never seen one before. The inside reminds me of the 1977 Olds Cutlass S Coupe I had as a teenager. Red on Red on Red looks really similar. It is ugly tho,Sorry

Those of us in the H-body forums have been discussing this car for over a year now since it first went up for sale. Is it sorta cool? Well, maybe in a unique kinda way. Is it rare, yes, but does that make it valuable? Is it in excellent condition for a 40+ year old H-body, YES! And therein lies the dilemma. Personally, I think I’d buy it and convert it into a white/gold Hurst Olds phantom car, complete with new, more tasteful Hurst paint scheme and gold 5-spoke Hurst wheels. But that’s just me.

It is an H-body car and unique.
I agree with Ken H. another H-buddy of mine that transforming it to be more Hurst-Olds theme would be extremely KOOL!
These cars are very desirable and if one is lucky enough to find them in this condition they can still grab them at terrific prices!.. my Sunbird isn’t leaving my sight for under 25g’s…and if folks go to the H-body forums they’ll see others that are being coveted and loved! Long Live the H..

I had an Oldsmobile Omega and then bought a Chevy Monza but would have been very happy with the Starfire. I\’m not sure I like the kit, but I\’ve always liked the car and would love to have one again someday. They were fun to drive.

My dad worked for Oldsmobile as a car distributor back then. When the StarFire debuted at some sort of show he attended, he told me it looked like a 280 Z. Or 260 or 240 whatever was around back then.

Had a 77 Monza Mirage in 1990, slapped a 406 in it along with a T350 and 8 3/4 rear end. My first car build. Fun times!

A friend had a 76, with a 350 4bbl with a 4 spd. It was fun. You could really feel the torque twisting the Unibody. lol

This could be cool. Wheels look like bad Centerlines, but it could be turned into something cool. I like the Monza\’s that raced in Trans-Am. series. There were only a few, but they really did pretty well.
