Auction Action: Mark Donohue’s Championship Winning 1971 Javelin On the Block

The 1971 AMC Javelin that Mark Donohue drove to a championship in the Trans-Am series will be sold at the upcoming Russo and Steele Monterey Auction. This car was a true sledgehammer, racking up seven race wins during the 10 race 1971 Trans-Am season. It was the last car that Donohue ever drove in Trans-Am and the only one team owner Roger Penske had built for the ’71 campaign.

The car has been painstakingly restored and is ready to compete at vintage Trans-Am events or whatever type of action that the new owner wants to participate in.

It is pretty amazing that the whole car stayed together all these years and the people at MAECO Motorsports in Northridge, California did an awesome job shining it up and bringing it back into competition form.

This car in our opinion, is far cooler than the “Dan Gurney” Mustang that recently made headlines. That car was driven by Gurney for one lousy race and never did much. This car is a legit legend, stomping the GM, Ford, and Chrysler entries into dust in 1971 and cementing the legend of the Penske/Donohue connection. They were a pair for the ages.

Hit the link below for a full photo gallery and lots of documentation about the car and the great history behind it. This is the seminal AMC vehicle for any ultra hard-core collector of Kenosha steel.
