Auto Trader Classics Find: The Last Super Duty Catalina Ever Made

Auto Trader Classics Find: The Last Super Duty Catalina Ever Made

In January of 1963 GM pulled out of all organized auto racing racing and put the binders on all of the factory built special edition hot rods and race cars. Among the top of hot rod heap during that time were the vaunted Super Duty Pontiacs. We found the last on ever produced for sale on AutoTraderClassics.com.

The Super Duty we found in the ad we linked to below is incredibly rare, but also a weirdo among the small grouping of 88 Super Duties built in 1963. The reason is that this car was built with the lightweight drag racing body and the heavy duty frame intended for NASCAR use. It is also equipped with a single 4bbl carb instead of tri-power.

Why the mish-mash? This Poncho was constructed with Pikes Peak in mind and it was built for Indy 500 star Johnny Mauro to drive. The car is fully documented and was restored by Floyd Garrett. According to the ad, the factory build sheet is marked “Mauro Spec Rush.” The rush part was to get the car built before January of 1963 when the lights were turned out on the factory hot rod party.

Hit the link below to see the photos and the rest of the story on this bitchin’ car. Of all the factory race-type cars that were built we hold these Pontiacs in pretty high esteem. The 421ci mill was one bad mother in the early 1960s and even for a few years past their prime, these babies were able to shock and awe more modern Detroit iron.
