BangShift Question Of The Day: Do You Have An Automotive Addiction Problem?

BangShift Question Of The Day: Do You Have An Automotive Addiction Problem?

A while back, a bunch of people I know were having a discussion on where the line between multiple cars and hoarding was drawn. At what point do you step back, size up the fleet and mutter, “ok, this is too much?” I’ve never gotten to that point. Seriously. I’ve downsized once, only to free up some cash, but I’ve never willingly sold off cars just because there were too many to handle. Currently, at BangShift Mid-West, there is a two-plus-two rule in effect with the Cadillac limo being an exception to that rule. We each have a daily driver and we each have a project or toy vehicle. (Or, as far as I’m concerned, we have three daily drivers, one in the middle of a build and a retaining wall with a license plate attached.)

At my maximum, between the summer of 2009-2010, there was:

  • A 2006 Monte Carlo SS for a daily driver
  • The 1981 Dodge Mirada CMX “SuperBeater” second daily/fun car
  • The 1987 Dodge Diplomat “Warhammer” in-depth project
  • The 1973 Chevelle that was drivable, but was questionably legal and usually problematic
  • The 1984 Dodge Ramcharger that I wound up flipping
  • A 1978 Chevrolet Camaro that I wound up stuck with that I should have set on fire
  • A 1986 Plymouth Gran Fury that was drivable before I turned it into the Diplomat’s parts car
  • The “PedoVan” Aerostar
  • A Chrysler LeBaron convertible that I cleaned up for resale
  • A 1967 or 1968 Chevrolet stepside that was at my place for a couple of months for repaint and custom work
  • The 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T that I had for about one week
  • And because they were always there and I was known to use them, I have to count the 1999 Saturn and the two street bikes my roommate owned and kept on the property.

Is that bad? Eleven cars of my own in less than twelve months. All ran and drove at some point and excepting the Aerostar and one of the street bikes, were all legal for use in Washington State, so they were either smog-legal or exempt. I heard it from friends and co-workers all year long that I had a problem. I never saw an issue…I had cars that had purposes, I had projects, and I could use any of them just about any time. Ultimately, I’ve returned to a two-car per person situation because it’s manageable, but what do you think…is there such a thing as too many vehicles for one person? Do you need an intervention?

2 project cars are rookie numbers. Sorry man, it just had to be said. We had such great hopes for you in 2009/2010 but then you got all midwest on us (sensible)… there went a great ‘sqatch.

The wife and I have our daily drivers. And she has an old car. And I have 4 project vehicles and an old driver. And we have room to keep them .They are not setting in the driveway. They are all out of sight. I think that is an issue,if you have the room .Buy up all the good deals you can stand. But if you live in town with neighbors next door. Its not good for anyone ,even you. If you have to park in the street so you 6 project cars can be in the driveway

I have 1 rule. Never go in debt for anything automotive. We have a daily driver each, 1 long term project in the garage, a “extra” licensed/insured vehicle .

10 right now and half are runners. Problem? No! I might be buying back my 62 LeMans. Then I will need another one to make an even dozen.

Um, yes. We own 5 cars. My wife’s ’92 Corolla she bought new, my ’03 Crown Vic, the ’85 rwd Corolla is our lowest mileage vehicle at 87K and I use to bop around town in on weekends. The tan Montego in my sig pic could run if I tinkered with it long enough and removed all the crap stacked on top of it. The blue Montego is driveable as long as I ignore the noise from the tranny and pump the brakes to get it to stop. But I search craigslist almost every night to see what cool cars are for sale cheap.

Only 8 projects here, some easier than others. If I had just one car what in heck would I do if it was ever finished?
