BangShift Question of the Day: If The World Devolved Into A Mad Max Situation What (Real) Vehicle Would You Be Driving?

Yesterday’s item about the mammoth Kenworth 963 oil field truck got a bunch of commenters mentioning that it seems like a good choice for a zombie apocalypse or a Mad Max dystopia type of world. I heartily agree with them, but I am also thinking that everyone out there has their own opinion on exactly what they’d be driving in that type of situation.

There are some simple ground rules for this one. Firstly, it has to be a real vehicle. You can’t pick the Batmobile or something. Secondly, you are allowed to make any necessary modifications to the supposed vehicle. See, I would take that 963 and find a way to get crawler tracks from a D9 Caterpillar bulldozer onto it for maximum zombie crushing traction. There would probably be some steel plate involved and let’s not even go down the firepower road. There would be copious amounts.

Perhaps you’d like something more agile, fast, or nimble than a truck with a combination weight of half a million pounds. I an understand that. Something tells me that Chad would have a ’69 Camaro with a blower and bazookas…lots of bazookas. A wild guess? It is probably dead nuts on. I am sure he’ll tell us below!

  1. 75Duster

My Duster is already caged and subframed,so I would beef it up even more and arm it up with weapons, take out the 4:30’s and replace them with 3:23’s, then repaint it satin black after putting in a bigger fuel cell.

  2. Freeman42

A surplus up-armored Humvee, with a Duramax swap and converted to run on veggie oil (since gasoline will become the commodity most fought over).

Preferably with the .50cal mount still occupied and operational.

  3. CTX-SLPR

Zombies are different than post nuclear Mad Max. Zombies you need more terrain crossing and light protection capability. Mad Max you’d need armour to stop small arms fire at the cost of some of your manueverability. In either case low maintance, ruggedness, and if possible fuel economy would be valued.

Zombies I’d take a Volvo Sugga Army radio car with a Detroit or Perkins 4cyl turbo diesel. Fit it with nobby tires, a perimeter flame thrower system, front bumper gaurd suitable for ramming gates and mowing down zombies, probably Kevlar armor for the driver and a bulletproof windscreen.

Mad Max, South African Buffalo wheeled APC with slat armor for RPG protection and smoke grenade launchers. Not sure what armarment I’d put on it for offensive action.

I’d take our John Deere harvester with a cab modded into a sleeper, a decent sound system, protected windows, a .45 at my side, and room for my girlfriend! Who needs firepower when you have chopper power??

  5. Mara2

In a perfect Mad Max world, if you can say that!!. I would have to go with a Letourneau LCC-1 Snow train or similar, Zombies would just pop under them tires!!!
Or a CAT D9R military spec with all the platting and window protection on.
