BangShift Question of The Day: What Is The Most Annoying Automotive Debate?

BangShift Question of The Day: What Is The Most Annoying Automotive Debate?

I spent the weekend announcing at the 2013 Chevy High Performance Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia. One night over an adult beverages or two a bunch of us automotive writers were going great guns at one another over any number of topics. Certain muscle car supremacy, engine performance modifications, race car driver acumen, and a host of other topics all came onto the debate floor and frankly the more we imbibed the more impassioned the arguments became. A few topics hit the floor and were dismissed as being played out or unworthy for consideration. I’m not going to name those in order to keep your comments from being tainted but I bet they’re on your list of “tired” or annoying automotive arguments.

Bench racing is one of the best/most fun parts of being a car guy. For most of us, we spend more time bench racing on various mediums than we do actually wheeling our stuff. That being said there are still myths and stuff that people still believe because it has been barfed up over and over and passed of as fact. Some guys will defend those points until the end of time because the don’t know any better and it’ll make you want to gouge your eyes out with a pushrod when presenting them with factual evidence that they’re wrong. Those are the kinds of debates we’re talking about here.

    All this crap going on about the benefits etc of Autonomous Cars/Pods …….. worse yet when it comes from members of the media that try and present themselves as bonafide GearHeads . To the supporters of this ludicrous line of thinking I say ;

” To all Geeks , Wonks and lazy ***ed Techno Nerds …. your Autonomous Vehicle awaits you ….. Take the damn Bus ! ”

    😉

Any argument at a local car show about whether Chevy made an SS427 Nova or that Chevy would replace a blown 396 with an LS7 454 at no charge. Or any argument with a car show dufus for that matter.

I can’t stand brand loyalty debates. Most of the debates (particularly Ford versus GM) are based silly brand loyalty bashing. I like all types of cars and real hot rodders don’t care so much about badges or manufacturers as they do about reaching a certain goal such as looking cool, going fast, or whatever it may be. If I have a certain group of parts laying around there is a good chance they will end up in another brand of car regardless of their origin.

Debates over stock output or performance do very little for me too.

Any debate overly focused on brand loyalty, or using clever terms like “less” (for LS) or “Slo-par”, at any time after junior high. Talk to me about which way valves should point or cost vs. benefit and I’m interested.

I hate the brand loyalty arguments. Fords vs. Chevy vs. Mopar…blah. Blah. They all have strengths and weaknesses.

Then there is the crossbranding of car and drivetrains. Hot rodding was born doing this. People who get pissed about it sound like bigoted douchebags who need to get over it.

    street car vs drag car

you know september is just around the corner…. 🙂

Carb vs. EFI, particularly on cost. It’s really an apples and orange comparison given for the EFI cost the several other things that come with it (like spark control, rev limiters, and dozen other things).

Electric cars are good for the Environment !
    – batteries ( oh yeh good and safe to make & last a long time to )
    – charge them ( oh yep good safe to )

They most likely use as much energy charging them as driving a gas powered car.

The most annoying debate I ever saw was two guys with GTO’s with the exact same set up arguing about who had the fastest car. The actually came to blows over it.
Like that’s why they make straight roads.
Other than that it’s the guys that think the brand of car they like is faster and better than anything else.
I do my share of trash talking but I don’t really mean 99% of it. These guys do.

Anything you can legally put a tag on is a street car. Even if it runs 8 sec.
