BangShift Question Of The Day: What’s The Most Overplayed Look At The 2013 SEMA Show?

BangShift Question Of The Day: What’s The Most Overplayed Look At The 2013 SEMA Show?

Every year at the SEMA Show, trends emerge that polarize show goers and have us scratching our heads. After looking through all our galleries, have you decided that one particular trend is just too much? This year it seems to be the year of the fender flare, and we can’t decide whether we dislike it in general, or just on certain cars. We also can’t figure out what spawned this trend, or who to blame, whichever you prefer. Last year at SEMA Brian Finch and Kyle Tucker showed up with some serious flares up front on their Second Gen Camaros so that they could stuff even bigger tires underneath them for the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational. Should we blame them?

Below are some examples of the flares we saw today on the cars of SEMA 2013.

Is this the most overplayed look? Or have you found something else in our photo galleries that is even worse?

      WhooHOO! As Clarkson would say, “I’m nursing a semi . . . .”

      Flares? Si . . . Muy grande!

Flat/satin paint? No bueno, except as tasteful accents (matte hood; stripes)

      “Dubs -n- rubber bands?” Puke . . . .

“Under construction cars?” No, NO, NO!. Keep the wraps on ’em until a proper quincenera!

I have no problem with fender flares but what drives me nuts are satin/flat color paint jobs and any car with wheels bigger than 18’s.

    1. Royce

Jerry nailed it for me. These huge wheels and satin/flat paint jobs need to go away soon. Satin/flat are fine for accent colors or for certain builds, but it doesn’t look good on anything newer than the 50’s.

    2. BobMan

I totally agree on both counts. And what is up with the super slammed with 5 degrees of negative camber undriveable junks on display. Someone please tell me why the rims have to stick out an inch farther than the actual tire????

Yup … those photos would be it in a nutshell . The ‘ Take a modern albeit dull as nails Muscle Car … Glue on a bunch of Eurosnob DTM/WRC styling cues on it in a futile attempt to make it exciting or in any way competitive with the EuroSnob its trying to emulate … call it a ‘ new ‘ Trend …. create the parts for sale to replicate it … and then display it at SEMA with a healthy dose of BS in the promo copy ‘

      Fender flares FREAKIN RULE, DUDE!

Giant wagon wheels (<18" diameter) are too heavy and just plain SUK!

I want those bitchin flares on that Grabber Green Mustang!

What sticks in my craw are the under-construction cars. The implication is “This is going to be SO much more awesome than anything here we couldn’t wait to show it off”. The Trepanier Torino is cool but it made so many unfinished appearances the finished car had to be a letdown. The other aspect is cars that would not ever have been built were it not for SEMA to show them at. Gaudy, Impractical and bound for storage after the show. IF shown again it will be as “Our 2013 SEMA Car”. Pro Fairground at the Manufacturer level.

Way out of hand with the paint thing, cars are lowered to much, and the wheels are too big and too blingy!!!

  5. Wes

Wheels too large and sidewalls too short on way too many vehicles that they simply don’t look right on.

  6. Mark Rutkowski

It seems the ‘Ricer’ look is back in. Why bring back something that most people are ashamed of (like that creepy uncle that no one wants to admit is related to them)? What ever happened to clean, functional cars that were built to be enjoyed on the road? Oversized wheels, stretched tires, and anything else that can be used to ruin a car seems to be popular now. I guess bad taste never goes out of style.

What’s with the 80 mile deep dish wheels? Gotta love those wheel-bearing killing 0-backspace wheels! 20 inch wheels? How about 20 inch lips dawg!

The key to flares is they need to be subtle . Cant be bolted on should not look like a 80’s custom van flare on the back side where it come back to the body or a step on a RV like that flat blue camaro. Don’t even get me started on wheels. ( well you know it’s too late for that ….I’m on a roll ) 17’S ARE THE PERFECT WHEEL. ( I only have 16’s ) 18″s are a little big but if you have enough side wall you can generally pull it off. If I see one more custom flat paint job on a new or expensive car I think I’ll scream.

  8. Opinions....Pffff

What gets on my last damn nerve is all the whinny ars beiotches complaining how they hate big rims, rubber band tires, lowriders, flat/satin paint, murder out, blah blah blah….haters’ just hating on any kind of self expression that may differ from their own. I get that everyone likes something different but that’s what makes the Hot Rod / Custom Car scene so great to me is the diversity. I mean who the hell wants to go to a car show & see every car on the property, car after car, row after row look like the same 1969 Camaro, Fire Engine Red (glossy) Paint, Chrome 18″ rims w/ 60 series tires?

I like so many different styles, trends & eras of Hot Rod & Customs. To me it’s art, freedom of expression.
There are trends that I don’t like that’s fine, I just wouldn’t spend my money on that type of build. I build my ride the way I want & don’t give a fly’n rat’s tail what any keyboard bandit thinks or types about it.

    Opinions….Pffff….
Who cares what you don’t like, Enjoy what you do like!

    WHEW ^^^^ nice rant.

But most of us HATE the played out rat rod inspired satin or flat paint it is not art or inspired construction of a hot rod it is just one more lemming following the latest fad.

The sooner we get back to nice paintwork the better.

  10. RockJustRock

Something about that Camaro says Big Ass to me. If Big Ass is something you want to say it is effective. But I have to wonder why anyone would want to say Big Ass?

  11. odd ball

the technology not matching the wide bodies. don’t get me wrong I like the extra width knowing somewhere in Germany someone else is going to do the same. but those guys would finnishi it to standards not applied here. most of SEwMA is a car show with no go. 3 years of tring wtf
