Genius Or Sacrilege? A 1969 Camaro Station Wagon!

Genius Or Sacrilege? A 1969 Camaro Station Wagon!

(Photo by Justin Oney) – The response to this custom built creation should be interesting. Chad is the resident 1969 Camaro obsessed patient here at the BangShift insane asylum and since he likes them completely unmolested, this may not catch him right. Me? I think it is genius and would order one to be constructed immediately. The major flaw in my plan is a complete lack of funding, unless the guys building the car would work for grilled cheese sandwiches. I make a mean grilled cheese.

According to some quick research, the car is being built by the guys at Fast on Wheels and is planned to be at the 2013 SEMA show. If it comes out like the rendering, it will be bad ass. In my eyes, it doesn’t look too weird and seems like it could have been a factory piece back in 1969. The rear glass reminds me of Chevelle wagons and the only thing we would add is an old school roof rack. All old wagons need ‘da rack!

WHAT DO YOU THINK? IS THIS 1969 CAMARO STATION WAGON COOL? WEIRD? WEIRDLY COOL? WHAT?

Not bad, i love the lines of the 69 and this carries them well. I dont really care for the rear quarter window’s, i think the line should have been lower to more mimick the door window lines. I do dig the front grill, but then again, i like the improvised streamliner looks when someone blocks off a front grill 🙂 Overall, yeah, I like it 🙂

I am so tired of 69 Camaros I like this take. they seem to be the new 57, not that they are ugly but they just seem to be the only car over built.

Since I am on the west coast and can make a darned good grill cheese; I will stand in a head chef for Brian. Chad’s convert is perfect for this conversion.

But, it needs the Vista Cruiser type of roof.

    1. Gary Smrtic

I agree, it needs the Vista roof. People who think the wagon variant looks wierd, though, are just used to looking and thinking about the “same old thing”. Like tri fives, Camaros are just so overdone they have all become boring, boring, boring…

      1. Keith Kaucher

The Vista roof was an Olds and Buick thing never a Chevy option however, I tried that just to see what it looked like it doesn’t work on this body it made the rear section too tall and heavy looking the slight hump in the roof with the Nomad style chrome ribs on it look great on the car and tie it into it’s Nomad history.

The car is being built to look as factory as possible from the outside. The interior will also be made to reflect “what would GM have done in ’69”. But underneath will be laced a racecar. I am the fabricator for Fast On Wheels and appreciate the write up and “liked” reviews!! Means a lot to my Team and our concept. You can follow this build on fastonwheels.com. We will be doing a site update for this project within the next 48 hours…

This is a concept car I design in 2009 for Camaro Performers magazine which got a tremendous amount of feedback all positive. I’ve had through the past 4 years at least 10 shops or individuals say they want to build this car but all of them have been all talk.

Last year I brought this design out as a 1/25th scale resin model kit and I sold over 50 in less than a year. So when Jared Basso of Fast on Wheels asked me which car concept of mine we should build I said the Camaro wagon.

I dont know if its genius or not but sacrilege c’mon its a baseline 307 that was rotting in a backyard if we had cut up a COPO ,a Z/28 or an SS big block the word sacrilege would apply. Everything in the wortld has been done to a ’69 Camaro but turn it into a station wagon so why not?

  6. Arild Guldbrandsen

I like it..it looks like something GM could have done..too all the critics..do it better.

  7. Keith Kaucher

Just so everyone knows Chevrolet mocked up two variations of a Camaro wagon as early as 1966 as well a a fastback body style, I have photos of the cars, so it was something that Chevy was considering.

This is just a representation of what the production car might have looked like. The purest need to look at the cars history before they bash an idea.

I have never been a huge fan of the 69 Camaro, always prefered the 67 and 68. It seems everyone else likes the 69. At any rate I think the 69 has been over done and this is a nice change. I hope they paint it like the concept picture and put the wheels that are on the concept picture. Its a 69 Camaro that I would drive.

just for the record Keith and Jared are amazing people …. They have completely ignored the nay sayers and are building something unique and different … and if you think you can do better then i’d like to see it…. for the meantime give these guys some credit for stepping outside of the box

      1. Jerzy Goon

no worries brother …. youre good people … keep up the good work and i will do what i can on my end…. i comend you guys for taking on such a huge project and i know it mean a lot to keith to see it steel … \m/ you guys rock

    What’s the problem? It’s not like the world’s about to run out of ’69 Camaros . . . .

    1. keith kaucher

LOL! There were a total of 243,085 Camaros built in 1969, and with Dynacorn repopping ’69 Camaro bodies and so many of them being restored every year there very well may be tad more of them now then in 1969.

      1. Garry

        For all I know you’re a bill collector….lol!

Much appreciated sir. I think the car looks killer.

  11. Remy-Z

F*ck ’em if they can’t take a joke. It looks better than the red Camaro wagon in the other thread, it’s one of many projects they have going on, and it looks well-done so far.

Remind me, guys…y’all are the ones who LIKED my Mirada, right?

  12. TubbedPacecar

While I too am a ” Wagon guy”, and like the notion of a Camaro SW, there are a couple of things I see in the drawing, as well as the bare metal pic that Brian posted that I do not care for.
Some might call me nit picky, but the single most glaring thing I see is the difference in elevation between the driprail over the door glass, and the top edge of the trim over the quarter windows. To me, they should be at the same elevation…..(ie:The top edge of quarter glass/& trim needs to come down to match).
Having said that, the lower portion of the quarters looks really good, easily recognizable as ’69 Camaro.

    1. keith kaucher

If you look at a ’68-’72 GM midsize wagon that is how the window line was, this car has been designed with all of GM especially Chevrolet’s styling cues that they were doing at that time to build a Camaro wagon that looks like Chevy built it. that line drops down too by about an inch when the rear side window trim is installed.

  13. Brian Lohnes Post author

Like I said in the blog item, I am a fan of this thing. Like several people have said, there are 1969 Camaros on every corner and this one is different from all the rest.

To me the response here is indicative of what you encounter with any good and intriguing design. It provokes thought and emotion…positive and negative. In my mind there is no such thing as a sacred automotive cow (aside from a few insanely rare and significant examples) and to take a new spin on an icon like a 1969 Camaro….Hell yeah!

    Brian

  14. Jared Basso

A common point brought up has been the rear window elevation. I posted a pic just now on facebook.com/fastonwheels that gives a nice view. Keep in mind that the rear side window trim is not on and will add another inch of fill. But if you align the rear sides with the door top, the angle will cut the window down dramatically. And that means the kids just ain’t gonna see the tops of them redwoods. And this IS a family wagon. For all those poor souls who had to choose between the kids and the car.

    1. keith kaucher

That’s right Jared, this is the “Ultimate Grocery Getter”, for the man or woman that wants a Camaro but has little ones and a budget for one muscle car in the family.

  15. Todd Napier

Ok the reality of it all is that MOST of us can’t have what is basically a 2 seater, I bought a 2011 Camaro recently and I just couldn’t get rid of it fast enough, I just don’t have room in my life for a vehicle like that. This is a car that could be, it’s cool and I’m sure it stands out in any crowd, I have a porsche with an LS3 engine in it, the Porsche purists whine a lot but an ls motor is 60 pounds lighter than a Porsche turbo motor, has a 50000 mile gm warranty and will run off and leave that hair dryer junk, it works for me and if this works for him GREAT.

    1. Keith Kaucher

Cool I know the guy here in West LA that built the very first PorChev as he calls them, in 1969 after finding out how expensive it would be to rebuild the 4 banger motor for his ’68 912, he looked over at the 283 Chevy sitting on the garage floor and thought Hmmm? He went on to build several more including a twin turbocharged 377 Chevy powered 914 that turned 217 MPH on the back straight of Riverside in the mid Eighties.

    1. Keith Kaucher

The Icon almost had a production wagon as Chevrolet did numerous design studies of it from 1966- 1970. We’ve built fake concept car that didn’t get crushed.

  16. ratty

looks great!.. especially the rough no-paint look, in the pic of actual car that is… hatin’ the too-large rubber band wheels in the illustration, wheels ‘n tires like that on a muscle car makes me want to throw up… now THAT’S sacrilegious

  17. Royce

The concept drawing looks nice. Build the car the way you think it should be built and nevermind what anyone else thinks. Unless you plan to put it into production, who cares what anyone else thinks. I have owned 6 Camaros over the years, I am burned out on them, but this is a fresh idea.

I would never talk about another mans project in a negative way, those that do usually have no idea or the skills it takes to pull something like this off.

On the other hand if you are going to ask what people think, expect to hear negative things. You don’t have to defend your project or idea. I look forward to seeing the finished product. Great work so far!

  18. Anthony Castillo

I love wagons (hate SUVs), my hot rod is a wagon. I love to see cars that were never wagons turned into wagons and this one looks right as one. Keith, my question is, can I get this in a sedan delivery model? How about a 70-73 RS Camaro wagon? Just a thought.

    1. Keith Kaucher

I don’t currently offer a sedan delivery version of the Camaro wagon model, but its an easy conversion just glue in a solid piece of plastic in the large rear side windows and putty around it.

The second gen Camaro wagon is another one that I’ve considered doing but right now I have 14 masters going at once and no time to work in my shop to finish them right now.

  19. paul dunagan

    Keith,
Outstanding !!! I’m a Ford man myself , but this design is really cool. I want one! Think of the sound system you could put in this thing . What a head turner. Keep up the good work , you inspire thinking outside the box with designs like this. The world could do with a few less 69 Camaros

  20. Bob Jones

I have owned 3 Camaros, 1967, 69 and 76. All bought brand new. I still have the 69. Usually I don’t like it when something is done to change the lines of them, but I really like this one. If they had offered them back in the day I would have owned one. Go for it guys it looks GREAT!!

  21. Man a free

Here’s my thing nothing really works on this car. For starters the doors are too long for it to flow right. Chop’em off about six inches. It’s just that front is too long for the rear to work right. In the drawing it doesn’t look to bad but on the car itself it just isn’t right. Also It sort of reminds me of the new Magnums. I hate the rear of these cars. They just sort of fall off. And with this it’s like we wanted to put a mini spoiler on it but it just doesn’t look right. The only wagon roof top that I see working is the ’64-’65 Malibu wagon top. Plus too you need to rework the rear panel area to look right too. Because while these cars had sexy rears they’re not going to work on a wagon.

  22. jimmy hicks

its almost impossible to go wrong with a 69 front clip with hidden headlights…but this is not even close…the idea is very cool…very cool…ive seen the 69 and 2002 conversions…they were pretty cool..of course there were the haters…but dont sink any more money into this design…its not even close to cool…

  23. Steve Kofron

I owned a 67 Camaro for 30 years, love Camaros. Always loved 69s also, even had a few. Now I own a 66 Chevelle wagon,66 SS coupe, 71 Elcamino SS. I’m a Big fan of wagons. This build is going to look “AWSOME” you got my vote. Can’t wait to see it at SEMA. Great work and design.

  24. Ray May

I like the “they should have made one of these” type builds. I am driving a 56 Chevy ElCamino I designed and am currently working on a 66 Malibu 2dr Nomad Wagon conversion.
69 Camaro’s are a great looking car. This concept design caught my eye in a good way. Interested to see how the back is being designed. So far I love what I am seeing. It should be a real head turner.
