BangShift Tune-Up: “Black Honey” by Thrice (2016)

BangShift Tune-Up: “Black Honey” by Thrice (2016)

“To be everywhere is to be nowhere. People who spend their whole life travelling abroad end up having plenty of places where they can find hospitality but no real friendships. The same must needs be the case with people who never set about acquiring an intimate acquaintanceship with any one great writer, but skip from one to another, paying flying visits to them all. Food that is vomited up as soon as it is eaten is not assimilated into the body and does not do one any good…”

-Seneca the Younger (translated by Robin Campbell) from Letters from a Stoic: Epistulae Morales Ad Lucilium

Researching the story behind “To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere”, the album by Thrice that “Black Honey” is found on, has been one of the more thought-provoking things I’ve done in the last few months. The story goes like this: after thirteen years of writing, touring, concerts, and the need to reconnect with family, the members of Thrice went on hiatus in 2012. While the band worked on individual projects, they did not return as a band until 2015, after they all had decompressed and realized that they wanted to go back to making music as a band instead of staying apart. The title of the album is what grabbed me the most. The words are thousands of years old, but look at how we operate in today’s society…when do you get time to take a break and decompress? With smartphones, internet, instant contact and informaton at your fingertips, something as basic as sitting on the porch, soaking up a sunset or just taking a relaxing drive has become the vacation, the need for a small bit of relief more important than ever.

Take your time when you need to take it. Go take that quiet drive by yourself. Go walk in the woods. Go spend a day in the garage with no schedule or pressure. You need it more than you know.

The best band around and they don\’t get nearly the attention they deserve. Incredible live, in the garage, or in the car.
