BangShift Tune-Up: “Heavy Metal (Takin’ A Ride) by Don Felder (1981)

(To this day, I don’t think that I was ever in the right state of mind to watch the 1981 flick “Heavy Metal”. I’ve seen it, yes. I’ve beat steering wheels into submission every time the Sammy Hagar track “Heavy Metal” comes blasting through the speakers. But on the grand scheme of things? I probably needed more chemicals in my body before I truly appreciated what I was seeing. Or maybe I just needed to sit down and read some of the magazines that were the inspiration. Either way, there is no denying that the soundtrack to the film was a highlight all to itself…a great mix of music, the lineup is basically a who’s who of late 1970s rock music ready to go. Here’s Kevin Brown’s take on the Don Felder version of “Heavy Metal”, complete with film clips of car action…-ed.)

(Words by Kevin Brown) If you love classic rock and car movies, you need to check out this sweet montage set to the beat of Don Felder’s “Heavy Metal”. The video opens with a scene from Heavy Metal itself, then quickly transitions into many other great 70’s and 80’s flicks that are sure to get your gears turning!

One thing I noticed in this video that I was surprised I hadn’t noticed before was a quick clip of the Bullitt Mustang dropping the clutch in reverse, and chattering the rear axle violently as it axle wrapped its way backwards. You can actually see the choppy burnout mark on the ground as the car speeds away. Besides this we have clips of cars evading bad guys, exploding, and of course a General Lee flying through the air to meet its death on the opposite bank of a river. Anyway, this is a quick montage features scenes from basically every great car movie ever made, alongside some epic classic rock, so go check it out!
