Pro Commuter Perfection: This 1991 Oldsmobile Calais Quad 442 W41-R Is The Perfect Daily. No, Really!

Pro Commuter Perfection: This 1991 Oldsmobile Calais Quad 442 W41-R Is The Perfect Daily. No, Really!

Before you say one word, I want to lead with the horsepower ratings for some of the better choices in vehicles for 1991: basic Corvette had either 245 or 250 horsepower, depending on your axle selection. Camaro and Firebird had 245 horsepower 5.7L V8s, too. The Mustang GT had 205 horsepower, the Dodge Daytona IROC had 152 horses, and the Chevrolet 454 SS pickup truck had 255 horsepower (but plenty of torque to back it up).

This N-body Oldsmobile Calais Quad 442 is packing 227 horsepower and that’s naturally aspirated. This is a one-of-maybe 15 monster, a W41-R. That wicked Quad 4, a five-speed, suspension trickery, claimed lightweight body panels, and so on and so forth. Here’s all we need to know: we’d want proof on the power figures via dyno, but if it’s true, this caged bastard is the perfect commuter car. Get over having to step over the bars to get into the car and realize that you are driving something that is more exciting, unique and rare than the brat in the BMW 3-series. It’s 1980s GM Xerox copy looks play into your favor here: it’s light, it’s angry, and it can back up it’s claim to the 442 nameplate in a way most people wouldn’t fathom. For that alone, it’s BangShift-worthy.

Very nice! These also sometimes had a limited slip in the front of them too. They are capable of some big numbers with the usual tricks. The old rocket parts catalog had a tougher rocket block available with dry sump parts and titanium rods ( pretty bad ass thing to offer back then). Check out the olds aerotech stuff too for some interesting history.

Buick, Olds , and Pontiac kept trying to innovate through the 80s and 90s. Chevy killed anything good they did or threatened the Vette. Stupid thinking. Quad 4 and Olds v8 Indy motor lead to Chevys.
In the 50s chevys were the poor mans rides, BOPs were luxury

Drive a Quad 4? Nope. Unless you have Warren Johnson building you Quad 4’s to have ready to swap, the claimed big power 4 will grenade and leave you ride-less. Even with WJ’s olds majic a quad 4 is a few passes away from being scrap metal.

If I was going to have a N body I’d have a 3.0L V6-5 speed. Then I would swap the 3.0 for a built 3.8L. & add a Turbo. Then I’d put out dyno numbers that would scare Mustang owners.
