Rough Start: A Rally Sport Camaro For A Reasonable Price

Rough Start: A Rally Sport Camaro For A Reasonable Price

I tend to be quick to write-off rubber-nosed second gen Chevrolet Camaros. Blame it on a few bad examples in my past, blame it on my personal tastes, but for the most part, they don’t do it for me personally. Compared to a split-bumper or even a 1974-77 big-bumper Camaro, the rubber-noses look longer and just feel…I don’t know…disco-tastic? Maybe it’s because power was seriously down and fluff and filler were seriously up or what, but they aren’t for me. That doesn’t mean that they are worth shutting down, though. It’s still a second-gen F-car and immediately, Hot Rod Magazine’s E-Rod Camaro comes to mind for a build. They found a well-used second gen Z28 and built it up into a machine that anyone would be proud to own.

Five thousand isn’t even going to scratch the surface of duplicating that build, but we can at least find you a solid second-gen Camaro that would be perfect for a starting point. We located this 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport in a west Phoenix suburb for $3,800…and that’s a surprise, because the values of second-gens have been climbing rather high lately. Overall, it’s a nicely used and slightly sun-baked car, sporting the neat two-tone paint scheme and the six-port Nova rally wheels in body color. The interior and underhood aren’t shown, but you know the specifics: more than likely a 305, a TH350 automatic, and enough vacuum hoses to induce nightmares. The perfect start for a performance build. Get some new tires and a couple of seat covers and you’d be on your way…well, almost.

If you can look past one teeny, tiny hitch…a missing title…this California blue-plate car could be yours. Care to do a little paperwork legwork to get a reasonably priced disco Camaro?

I never touch a vehicle without a title. Been burned before. Cops came, searched entire house and shop, took car, treated me like a criminal. Guy stole it and I bought it off Craig’s list. Never again
