Slow And Low: Check Out This Backyard-Built 1963 Corvair Lowrider!

Lowriders haunt me. Just when I think I’m past the idea of a slammed cruiser with adjustable suspension, one comes along that makes me take another look at the scene. Any other day, I’d admire the paint work, check out the custom touches, and move on, but there is something about Chris Mageno’s 1963 Corvair that works. And you’re going to have to help me out with determining what that is, because I can’t figure it out at all. It’s not my favorite Corvair…that would go to the 1965-69 two-door models. It’s an automatic-equipped car, which means Powerglide. Yet, from it’s hybrid purple-ish color that looks very similar at a quick glance to GM’s Evening Orchid shade from the mid-1960s to the wide whitewall tires tucking up at full layout, there is something attractive about the little Corvair. Custom touches like the bumpers, the recessed headlights with single-bulb conversion, and the Pontiac Catalina taillights molded into the back panel add visual appeal, and the stock 2.7L flat-six has been left alone minus fixing a minor oil leak.

I love it. I don’t know why, but I love the execution of this Corvair lowrider.

The best custom cars are the ones based on cars that nobody but nobody has ever even considered modifying in this manner. This Corvair is a shining example of beauty and originality and for that reason should be cherished!

The custom touches on the car definitely makes it stand out but the grille is kind of bland.
