The Things You Find In The Yard: How About The Nitrous Kit On This Crunched Mustang?

Copart is the land of crushed dreams…literally. It’s an insurance house that processes out wrecked vehicles. Which means, if you are in the market for a late-model powertrain donor, that it’s a gold mine. This is where you find a car too far gone to repair, but one that still runs and can be used as a teardown project, and you bid for it at auction. You win, you pay the man and strap your prize onto a trailer and head to the garage to get the surgery going. Most of what you’ll find will be typical vehicles, daily drivers that ran out of luck. But sometimes, you get a gem…

Cleetus McFarland is hunting down a Coyote/6-speed powertrain for a Ford Crown Victoria. Hm…we like where this is going already! He finds a late-model Mustang that fits the bill nicely: a six-speed GT that took the brunt of the impact right at the front of the passenger door. The car itself is without question dead. But the powerplant is very much alive…more so than it should be getting credit for. This was somebody’s baby…you can tell that from the Borla axle-back pipe kit on the car you get to hear when they fire the poor Stang off. But note the underhood view. It’s a clue as to what may have happened here…

Nearly 45 (sigh) years ago I bought a 390 fe outta Galaxie marked everywhere as a 390. Pulling pistons noted they were marked “428 4V”. Bore and stroke measurements confirmed this. I was very happy as yards had a waiting list for all the F series camper/boat towing crowd. Paid $50. After freshing it propelled my ’66 Fairlane into the 12’s
