Funny Car Forensics: Can You Give Us Some History About This Flopper On The Shelf?

Our buddy Blair is the lead man at the clandestine “bat cave body shop” that we visit from time to time here on BangShift. We happened by the shop the other day and while there was some great work being done on cars at floor level, the real star of the show is the vintage funny car you see up on the pallet rack. Blair scored the body for a song from a guy in Maine and the chassis is another New England based piece that is not connected to this car in any way. It is correct for the era, but has no history with this 1975 Mustang body.

Speaking of history, we’re trying to dig some up on behalf of Blair regarding this body. The car was raced out of Tennessee at some point as you’ll see some of the tattered lettering on the nose advertises a body shop in Pleasant View, Tennessee. Like all old school race cars, this thing has obviously been all over the place through its life. We’re wondering if the 1975 Mustang was raced as an alcohol car, nitro car, whether it was blown or injected, and where it may have run. The name wasn’t the most original pick in history as Bill “Maverick” Golden popularized it with the famous Dodge A-100 wheelstander of the same moniker.

Blair isn’t 100% sure what direction he is going to go with the car, but the guy is super knowledgeable and respectful of drag racing history, he’s the guy that painted the magnificent Hard Guys Mustang AA/FC we’ve featured here. Whatever he does it is going to rule. We’ll keep you posted!

Scroll down, take a peek and let us know if you have any info on this car that we can pass along to Blair. It is bitchin’ ain’t it?!

Someone needs to Google that body shop and the names below the windows. That would be a good start to begin gathering information about this car.

Car # 339… hmmm…. sounds like an NHRA Div. 3 car. That’s right in Bret Kepner’s back yard. I am going to post a link on his FB page and see if he is familiar with it.

Looked up Woodson Custom Body Shop, Pleasent View TN and nothing came up.. Can’t see a good pic of the pizza/BBQ place…but since the Auto Body shop says Pleasant View TN, then the driver must have been in the South East division

What does the name say after the Moroso emblem?

  5. Jim Kuhn

It looks like the “owner” is Boyce Woodruff and the “driver” is Tommy T Gruff or Gruff , good luck, maybe some better pictures would help.
