Rough Start: When Was The Last Time You Thought About A Dodge Ramcharger?

Rough Start: When Was The Last Time You Thought About A Dodge Ramcharger?

The Ford Bronco is coming back. The Chevrolet Blazer’s descendant, the Tahoe, is probably the most popular family ride in my neck of the woods. The Ramcharger has been dead and gone since 1993, unless you lived in Mexico and got one of the funky 1999-2001 versions. Why is that? We know that the Ramcharger was never quite as popular as the Blazer and Bronco, but they were still a very capable rig with good engine selections and stout chassis and suspension bits. And don’t say “rust”, either. I’ve seen some K5 Blazers that would make even a jaded Ohio resident wince in sympathy.

I’ve owned one Ramcharger, a 1984, and I adored it. It was comfortable, it moved out well with it’s 360, and it was so simple to work on. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long in my world…I sold it, along with a couple other cars, to slim down my car count before moving states. But the good news is that a decent Ramcharger is well within Rough Start guidelines, and this black and red 1984 is a fine example. What engine is under the hood? Either a 318 or, if you’re lucky, a 360. Unfortunately here, the seller failed to mention. What they did do was to get some decent photos of what you’re getting into, which is a perfectly useable rig, and to mention “daily driven”. That’s important…knowing that this has been reliable transportation and is still getting exercised should ease any concerns you have about jumping into a 33-year-old SUV and going out for a cruise.

Years ago, “Doc” Burgess, the owner of the “Black Arrow” ’65 Plymouth that Grumpy won with Winter’s with in ’65, had a Ramcharger with a 360 in it. He had my dad drop a 440 in it! I’d like a 2wd Ramcharger (Or Trail Duster!), so I could slam it and make it handle a bit nicer. Never liked those high, stiffly spring vehicles that can’t carve corners….

The Ramchargers weakness was always it’s full time 4 wheel drive like many mid to late 70’s Blazers.
