The WTF? Files: Anybody Looking For A Very Pricey Dodge Magnum Ute?

The WTF? Files: Anybody Looking For A Very Pricey Dodge Magnum Ute?

When DaimlerChrysler rolled out the LX cars, they were pretty generous with the variants: two sedans, a two-door performance coupe and a station wagon. Let’s focus on the Magnum for a second: it brought back a historic Mopar nameplate that previously ran on the upgraded version of the LA small blocks, and prior to that, was a short-run late-B body that looked muscular cruising away from the opera at a leisurely pace. Hey, it was the 1970s, that’s just the way things were. The modern-day Magnum was how DC decided to sell the estate known in the UK as the Chrysler 300 Touring in the United States. Just like it’s B-body predecessor, it didn’t last too long, didn’t sell in huge numbers, and today has a cult following…and one member of that following might display the behavior patterns of a cult member, because we are struggling for any other explanation for the car you see here.

magnum-ute-2It started life as a 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8, the big-daddy model that added the 6.1L Hemi to the mix. Swinging 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, this was the one you wanted if you liked your Mopar with a bit of cargo space in the back. Except for one individual, who found that the pesky roof on this particular Maggie was just too constricting, so out came the welder and the saws, and the next thing you know, you have this. It’s dubbed the “Magnumino”. Ow…our heads hurt just typing that.

magnum-ute-4We know that Smyth Performance is working on a ute conversion kit that is based off of a Charger sedan, but we are suddenly having some doubts after seeing this. We will say that the work appears to be of high quality…there doesn’t appear to be any true hackery, the interior is finished off, the glass is well-set, and the “tailgate” is finished off pretty well with a spoiler. But there is something about the dimensions that jut don’t set well. Maybe it’s just us, but we think that the Magnumino could use a bit more bed length between the rear wheel and the bumper cap. We also think it could use a discount…$58,000 for a Dodge Magnum SRT-8 that has had a botched butt lift of sorts doesn’t seem quite right. What do you think?

Yuck. Even if the work was done well, the results are less than stellar. I saw a ’66/’67 Coronet with a ’67 Charger nose at the Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green a couple of years ago that was one of the best done atempts at making a Ute out of something that wasn’t.

Check out the pics on the website, the bed is not “cobbled” and the rear bulkhead has a raised “SRT” logo. Looks professional.

Why not just wait for the smyth kit to drop? They are selling a kit to do the same thing for like 4 grand

Looks well done…but I agree the dimensions are off. Sorry to see an SRT8 molested like that…I hope it was an accident car or had sutained damage to the wagon section that caused it to be the canvas. A for effort…F for exicution.

Ya know, I actually think its alright. Not a fan of the triangular transition from the cab to the bed, but thats being picky.

I think it looks fine – far better than the usual Chevy-based hunka shit fake utes that usually fowl these pages by their presence!
