Cash for Clunkers Crushing Deadline Hurts Recycling

Part of the law for the Cash for Clunkers program was that all the cars turned in for clunking had to be crushed within six months. Apparently that deadline was set in the first wave when only $1 billion was to be blown on car deals. When Washington DC tossed in the extra $2 billion, the deadline was never moved back to adjust for all the extra cars that would be coming in.

The result is that the cars handed in for clunking are overloading some of the larger wrecking yards and they are having to scrap them before the parts can be sold or recycled.
