Now that the dust has settled on the four-wide NHRA national event and the opinions of racers and fans are making their way to the limelight, some of the heavy hitter media members who cover the sport are chiming in as well. Jeff Wolf of the Las Vegas Review-Journal is pretty clear in his opinion that the race should be a one time deal, never to be run again. The drivers quoted in his story seem to agree.
Wolf lauds Bruton Smith on being a visionary and someone who is not afraid to take big risks, but also says that even visionaries miss one every once in a while. The drivers that make up the PRO organization agree as they signed a petition lobbying for that type of race to never happen again as a national event.
Making things even more interesting is Smith’s stated plan to add the two extra lanes that he didn’t add when he constructed The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The track was originally intended to be a four-lane job, but the NHRA convinced him to simply build a two lane track. Not being a dummy, Smith set the place up so that he could add the other two lanes with minimal changes.
Will he now try to muscle the NHRA into ignoring cat calls by racers, owners, and some fans? Smith’s history has been to confront and crush the opposition at all costs. Technically, this is not his fight, but that’s never stopped him before.
