A Massachusetts company called Terrafugia has been chosen by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to lead the development of a bad ass flying 4×4 vehicle for the military. The specs that the Pentagon brass are looking for seem impossible, but with all the brainpower in the defense industry, impossible is not in their lexicon.
The truck will need to be four wheel drive, have the ability to travel nearly 300 miles in the air and be operated by “non-pilots”. It isn’t exactly a Humvee helicopter, but the concept is damn close! The announcement we read said that the uses for the vehicle would be varied. Medical evacuations, avoidance of roadside explosives and IEDs, and delivering the Special Forces behind enemy lines would be just a few.
There was no mention of weaponry or armor, but we’re going to assume this baby will have a couple of ways to defend itself or neutralize potential threats.
Imagine kicking some ass on the ground, throwing a switch and then kicking some ass from the air! Sounds like something from a crazed Sci-Fi movie, but the Pentagon wants a working prototype in five years.
Get cracking boys!
