Automobile or aircraft carrier? This massive piece of rolling coolness is Dodge’s sporty Custom Royal Convertible, circa 1957. Even though it’s missing the fancy markings, you could still land a helicopter on the trunk lid of this big guy.

The convertible market in the late 1950s was full with some interesting models from many manufacturers and Dodge was not going to miss out on that market share. We’d venture to say that these cars are among the best looking of the era. It seems impossible, and completely improbable, but with the top down this car actually seems longer than it really is.

The photo cracks us up. It’s as if the guy driving the car is saying, “Yeah, sure I have these two beautiful women with me. That’s no problem though. We can get the other 13 of you comfortably in the back seat of the car. Come on down!”

In the late 1950s bigger was better, and in a lot of way, the same logic is still applicable today. Sadly, we’ll never see a car like this built again. Preserve our history!
