Craigs List Find: A 1968 AMC Rebel With an Awful Secret

Craigs List Find: A 1968 AMC Rebel With an Awful Secret
We were delighted to find a kick ass (looking) 1968 AMC Rebel for sale on Craigslist. Our elation was elevated by the fact that the car was located just a town over from our east coast offices. We don’t have the $9800 to buy it, but we thought that we’d run across it at a local cruise of car show. Sadly though, all is not as it seems with this great looking car. It’s leading a double life.

Normally we don’t get all wrapped up in the “wrong motor” stuff, but it really cut us down when we saw that this otherwise neato car had a 350 Chevy under the hood. Adding insult to injury, the damned thing doesn’t even have headers on it! Come on, if you are going to do a Chevy swap, in an AMC, it better be a fire breathing, nitrous snorting, stroker at the least.

Maybe it was the orange paint, the rust free, perfectly straight body, the matte black hood and scoop, but we were kind of crushed not to see a blue valve-covered 390 under the hood. The grandpa wrap on the steering wheel was the final straw.

Like Michael Corleone says in the Godfather Part II: “You broke my heart. You broke my heart!”

I have a bad ass 68 Rebel SST with the original 290. It’s Hileah yellow with a flat black top and flat black stripes on the hood. Best of all, not only is it the coolest car in the world, but I acquired the car when I traded it straight across for a ’74 VW super beetle! Lisa
