Craigslist Find: This Is The Nicest Camaro Body VW Kit Car You’ll Ever See – Freak Show Supreme

Craigslist Find: This Is The Nicest Camaro Body VW Kit Car You’ll Ever See – Freak Show Supreme

Color us absolutely floored. Back in December of 2012, we ran a blog item featuring a bizarre and totally sad sack looking abandoned VW kit car that had a Camaro-style body on it. The proportions were all wrong and it literally looked like something that came off the set of a Disney movie. See that car here. We thought it was some sort of sad one-off anomaly and then we were tipped off to the ad for the car you see below which appears to be the same kit (but with some changes). The seller of the car on Craigslist claims that this was a special one off built for a VW event in the early 1970s, but we’re not so sure.

The major differences between the cars start right at the nose. The crappy forlorn one in the old Craigslist ad does not have front bumpers on it but it does seem to have the brackets in place to hold them. This finished car has a t-top style roof whereas the other car is a normal solid roof, and the junker lacks the front chin spoiler. On the flip side, there are a ton of similarities. The “distinctive” rear is the same on both cars. They both have an indentation along the lower doors, and they both have the nose that looks like a Camaro with its cheeks being squashed. There’s no doubt in our mind that these are from the same kit maker.

That being said, the finished car looks eons better than the one that was rotting in the weeds. Sounds like a dumb thing to say with an air of surprise but the difference is so stark it bears mentioning. Frankly we thought that whether it was painted or not the car would be a complete disaster. We don’t think that the red car is. Very weird, lots slower than a normal Camaro, and bound to raise a million questions at every show it attends, but kind of fun in a certain way. We still don’t want to own it but we wouldn’t put the new owner in a support group if they purchase the car…unless they pay the $7800 asking price.

What do you think? Same style kit as the car in the first story from 2012? Do you despise it? Would you drive it?

“Serious buyers…”? How about seriously disturbed seller. No this, I won’t do that, no tire kickers yada yada yada. Pretentious ass.

If you do a Google search for: Camaro kit car vw (or just: kit car VW)
There’s quite a few of these out there, back in the 70’s VW’s were all they used for kit cars and you could get almost any kind of body including Ferrari, Camaro, Porsche, Jeep, Bugatti, street rod, whatever.
The proportions were never right but no one cared back then….

I’ve seen one of these kits in person recently at a VW swap. Holy hell are these things ugly…and those of us who remember fiberglass quality back in the seventies…yeah, it was that bad.
