There’s a pretty devoted community for 4×4 AMC Eagles from the late 1970s and early 1980s. There are people who simply like to restore them, modify them lightly, and cruise them. Then there are people who like to take them a little further and bolt on some larger tires and maybe even get some lift action happening to expand their ability off road. Then there are guys like the dude selling the machine you see below. While the seller did not built the Eagle, he has wrenched on it pretty hard and seems to know his way around the vehicle. Simply put, the seller may not have been the builder but he is a gearhead.
What is so cool about this that BS reader Jeff Lee found it rad enough to send a tip? Ohhhhhh, there’s an LS-swap in the front, new axles underneath, a pretty serious lift (for an Eagle) big Mickey Thompson tires, Fox coil over shocks, a sweet factory fresh interior, air conditioning, and other luxuries like a spare tire. The Eagle has a Dana 44 up front and a Ford 8.8 out back both packing 4.56 gears. It is impressive to see the AMC wagon on an RTI ramp because it seems super capable! The seller claims that it gets 16mpg and he is asking $8,000 for it. We think that is pretty decent money even though the thing is weird, it is the good kind of weird. Functional, ugly, bad ass weird. That is BangShift approved!
I would really love to own this thing and take it bogging and rock crawling in the woods. The first time you blasted past a guy in a Jeep it would make that $8,000 wayyyy worth it!

Love that it’s still got a stock, very clean interior even with all the mods. So much want here…
ditto, except its red
As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to send this one in. Total Bangshift material. My buddy had an Eagle Wagon in high school and it was the quintessential two track party wagon. This example is just about everything you ever wished you could do to one.
Thanks for the kind comments, this is my car and I just stumbled on this article. I’ve gotten a bunch of tire kickers but no serious offers, so it looks like I’ll probably be keeping it for a while because I don’t want to give it away. It’s definitely a head turner. I’m headed to Nevada in a couple days for work and decided to drive the Eagle with the dirt bike in tow. I have no reservations about it making the 4,000 mile round trip.
Curious where in TN you’re located? Might want to ask my brother in Knox to check it out sometime…
