Rough Start: 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass – Those Graphics, Though!

Another day, another hypothetical $5,000 burning a hole in your pocket, another reason to start trolling the classifieds to see what’s out there. Unloved 1980s ride…meh. Rotted 1960s car? Eh…but what about a pretty clean 1976 Olds Cutlass wearing paint that could be from the 1970s, could be from the 1990s? How does that strike you? The car is claimed to be a World of Wheels winner in the 1990s, and it may have been, but what does that really mean to someone looking for a first project? Right now we’re seeing a nice A-body Olds that just needs a little here and there to be really good.

With an Olds 350 and TH350 automatic, the powertrain is set. Some paint touch-ups could be welcomed, but as for the rust repair mentioned in the listing, we simply can’t see it in the photos. Not saying it isn’t there…we’ve seen plenty of crispy Colonnades in our day…just that you’ll have to sniff out the tinworm. The interior and it’s crushed velour surfaces will grip you better than anything made by Recaro and as for the hood gauges, stripes and skinny Auto Drag wheels…they might not be completely my cup of tea, but they are period correct. We’d hunt down some wider wheels to take full advantage of the spacious wheel wells. As for the paint and the gauges…that would be your call.

Fresh tires and a good clean-out drive seem to be the only items on the to-do agenda to get started. We’d rock it. What about you?

Those wheels and graphics are straight out of the very late 70’s or very early 80’s. Lanzini Body Works painted plenty of cars with those kind of stripes during that time period. About the time the factory red paint of that era started peeling and fading.

If $5000 would be burning a hole in your head to spend it on this POS as you state, I can only imagine what you spend less money on . Classic douchey comment from an idiot.

My first hand-me-down car when I was 16 from my parents (1985) It was a really decent car for several years until a local shop didn\’t repair it properly and the front passenger wheel and hub broke off. They paid us a settlement.
