Rough Start: 1977 American Motors Hornet AMX – Here’s Your Chance, Rambler Fans!

Rough Start hunting AMC products is a challenge. It isn’t everyday that I find one worth posting up, even rarer if I find one worth posting up that isn’t an Eagle of some kind. Kenosha-based machines tend to show up either barely surviving, stone-dead stock or they are trashed beyond all hope. While I’m convinced that many die-hards would find a way, some cars aren’t worth the hassle. But today, I believe I’ve got one for you AMC fans that does have potential, that deserves a second life.

After the two-seater died off in 1970, the AMX name moved from being a model to being the hot trim for Javelin, Hornet, Concord and Spirit. The Javelin just made sense, but the rest of the cars, all Hornet-based, made sense for their size. With horsepower dwindling, a 258 six or a 304 V8 in a Hornet was the way to go if you still wanted a thrill from American Motors. AMC really tried to stick to the formula of providing enough handling and power to take on whoever was playing ball, but money for hot ticket cars was drying up fast.

This is an original four-speed AMX, but it isn’t an original 304 car…the 258 was canned a long time ago in favor of two more cylinders. The seller wanted to get this car together, but after thirty-six years it just didn’t seem meant to be and they are now letting it go for $1,500. We’d start going through the hard parts immediately, fixing brakes, changing fluids, checking bearings and inspecting the 304. Once the car fires off, then beauty work can begin. But the end product, a 304 4-speed Hornet AMX, is worth the effort.

What a deal! I’d jump in that in a heartbeat except for my 4 other cars in the driveway!

My 1973 Gremlin X had the same rust in 1976. Unless this one has rampant tin worm underneath this is a bargain.
