Rough Start: A V8 AMC Eagle, Just Like Kenosha Should Have Made!

Rough Start: A V8 AMC Eagle, Just Like Kenosha Should Have Made!

We have nothing against the American Motors 258ci inline-six. It is a damn durable engine, one that can be built to make healthy power, and is based on an engine platform that stuck around for decades, only ending production in 2006. It isn’t all that powerful from the factory, but it’ll get you where you need to go in a reliable fashion. Every American Motors Eagle product used the 258 six as the top-of-the-line engine, which was a solid decision, but that didn’t have to be the case.

Since the Eagle was based on the Concord, itself an evolution of what started as the 1970 AMC Hornet, there was space to fit the AMC V8 under the hood. And, happily, one enterprising individual has done that, jamming in an AMC 360 under the hood of this non-woodgrain Eagle wagon, along with a 727 automatic with a shift kit that will hold up better than the A-904 that would’ve backed the six up. Coil springs from a V8-powered Concord were installed up front to handle the added weight and Ford Ranger wheels were added because…eh, why not.

The car isn’t perfect…while it has been a daily driver when needed, it’s more of a toy and according to the seller, needs to be moved on because it hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. You’ll spend $1,500 for the car and add in for a set of tires immediately. After that…tune up the 360 and see about rallycrossing somewhere near your location!
