Rough Start: Now That Everybody Is Quarantined, How About Reviving This 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass?

Rough Start: Now That Everybody Is Quarantined, How About Reviving This 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass?

I don’t know when this “rough week” that’s been going on is going to end. I’ve seen stripped shelves. I’ve seen stores that are ghost towns. I’ve even been brave enough to step into a Walmart in order to find anti-viral soap because somebody in the family is looking for it. Schools are closed, races are cancelled or moved, cruise ships are getting docked…I’ll be blunt with you, readers, I’ve never seen anything like it and I’m sure a fair bit of you haven’t, either. While corona viruses themselves are fairly common, COVID-19 is something else altogether.

So, let’s throw out a hypothetical. Your job is now on hiatus and you have nothing to do with your time. Travel is out of the window, as is going to catch a concert, or visiting a museum. In fact, just about every fun vacation activity is shot down in flames. What can you do to occupy the time? How about a quick vehicle build? Start with something that’s pretty much done, fix something here and there, and you can either move it along or keep it around once the world returns to something resembling normal.

We’d go after this 1977 Olds Cutlass. It needs a windshield, the front seats recovered and either a full roof strip or a replacement vinyl roof.  After that, maybe some paint work to bring back the visual pop that this car would’ve had brand-new. Olds couldn’t make enough Cutlasses in the later 1970s and for good reason…they were well appointed without being gaudy, they were solid performers for the day with Oldsmobile power, they handled well, and they even had NASCAR clout. $3,500 buys it, and as long as it runs and drives, you should be under $5,000 to fix the major issues at hand. Pretty the car up at your own will, but hey…you have the time, right?

I’d “go after” finally sticking that flathead opposed 18hp Briggs in my 0hp minibike. But hopefully the mass-retardation will wane.
