Save The Fatties! 34 Massive, Vintage American Cars Destined To Be Demo Derby Fodder For Sale! Buy Them And Save Them One By One!

We have to thank Gray Had for the tip on this wild Craigslist ad which was targeting the eastern Colorado area. The ad is simple enough, it states that a former serious demo derby competitor is liquidating his crop of future cars and that they are selling for pretty (ok VERY) reasonable prices. We feel like the damned governor making the call to the executioners room at the prison to stop someone from being cooked in the ‘chair. Instead of the electric chair we’re trying to save these 34 classic American monsters from being violently smashed, bashed, and crashed to death in front of crowds at big demo derby events all over the country.

The photos alone tell the tale but there isn’t a spring chicken in the bunch. The owner of these cars knew what made for a successful derby machine and the basics that all these cars have are perimeter frames, curb weight well over 4,000lbs, presumably big block power, and a couple feet of space between the engine and the radiator. Get this statement from the ad:

31 GM full size cars including 7 Clam shell wagons, 5 Tow package Buicks and Oldsmobiles, 1 riviera and a bunch of 4 doors. most are complete and all would make excellent Derby cars. There is also a 63 Lincoln Continental 4 door, 63 Chrysler 4 door and a 78 Dodge Magnum 2 door.

Mother of mercy! These’s enough steel in that pile to build a couple of battleships! HELP…SAVE THE FATTIES! Don’t let all of these things go to other derby guys who are going to kill ’em! Hit the link below for more information, photos, etc.

These cars need to be saved. The generation of so called demo drivers haven’t a clue as to what these mean to a collector. Of course their intelligence is about as low as you can get in my opinion. You wanna demo cars, then demo the foreign trash that is out their for the picking. Where I live you can’t really tell the car is a demo as they have already bent everything in and changed engines(which is a waste of time). Reinforced everything with steel and pipe. The origin of demo derbys were that you bought a $200-$300 car broke out the glass, welded or bolted the doors shut and hoped for the best. Who ever convinced people to modify their cars more that was I mentioned are pure idiots…………..

This is heartbreaking. Jesus. Clamshells are impossible to find. A ’64 Chrysler? Sixties Lincoln? Holy crap.

Screw you, I am a demo driver, it is my hobby, maybe i should have a hobby of smoking meth like you instead, sorry everybody isn’t just like you. There is nothing like spending time building a car to compete, getting to the track and hearing the roar of your motor and the roar of the crowd. Buy them if you don’t want them demoed out. But to sit there and say how stupid we are is ridiculous. I would put a fair amount of money my IQ is far beyond your’s.
There is alot of these cars in the demo community, sometimes when they don’t sell for scrap price, they will get the bumpers cut off and it will get crushed, good I say if there is jackasses like this guy after them.

      1. Wagon Guy

I find it laughable that the guy who claims to have such a high IQ makes a post full of spelling and grammatical errors.

        1. jerad

yuppers, here is the deal i am not writing a book, i know people get all butt hurt about spelling and stuff, i saw the underlined sqwigely line (there it is again) and ignored it and my sentences tend to run on and on and on. I guess I just don’t appreciate somebody lumping a whole group of people who put a considerable amount of time and money into a hobby/sport consciously. You would be very suprised how creative and brilliant some of the ideas and things that go into these demo cars are. We actually aren’t just a bunch of dumb rednecks. I also understand the desire to save sweet old cars, as I have a few “collectables” myself. But to label a group of people like that is shitty, because someone is butthurt over some old boats. I would put money on these cars being worth more cash to a derby guy than most of the folks bashing the derby guys, and I don’t care how much money anybody has, good day.

learn how to speak English, as for derby, you don,t understand and with that attitude you never will

Your nothing but a waste as it is. Stating we have no intelligence. It’s people like you that don’t deserve to walk this planet. Go die elsewhere.

    5. SMART derby driver

Oh I’m sorry you think we are stupid. You a fucking dumbass. Meet us in public instead of behind a computer and then we will see who has more intelligence.

I owned a 76 Impala Custom 4 door like the one pictured in the ad. 350 Quadrjet. The person before me got rid of the cat and gutted the filler tube to run on regular. He also recurved the distributor. Actually it was a very nice car. Ran and rode well. Could take you any place in the world if you wanted it to.

  3. BRAKTRCR

I derbied a 76 Malibu wagon, no regrets… hated the car. It felt good. Came in 3rd place did good until I went head to head… err rear to rear with a full size Pontiac wagon. Broke the driveshaft in two, folded up the car pretty good. Crowd was impressed.

guys, guys, guys….lighten up a little..demo is probably the cheapest thing you can do with a car—and face it,for some cars,it would be a blessing to go out in a (minor) blaze of glory—no matter what kind of motorsport you do,drag, track, showqueen, whatever—somebody is going to cry “you ruined it!”—-the matching numbers weenie who thinks the non-stock air cleaner has devalued the car–the drag guy who guts a cherry 67 chevelle and tubs it–the lowriders who make it scrape just sitting at the curb….that said,i personally think that the big wagons would be bitchin’ tow rigs for your drag machine, trailer, whatever……

    1. Anonymous

Elky guy, I’m a purist when it comes to cars, but I still appreciate drag cars. At least a cherry ‘ 67 Chevelle being tubbed into a drag car, the end result is the car will still exist. A derby car will die quickly, because that’s the driver’s goal.

      1. Anonymous

Normally once a car has become a derby car, it’s chances of being anything other than scrap metal is slim to none.

  5. O Chrisman

I would save these classics, if it were me. These big cars are hard to find these days. It seems like these good deals always show up when I don’t have the extra money. When I have the extra money, I can’t seem to find deals like this. Always next time I guess. Hope they get saved.

  6. Shawn

I love hearing all the guys say, save all these cars derby is stupid… Who is going to buy one of these cars that needs a partial or full restoration to be road worthy. We’re talking fuel systems, brakes, drive line, interior, etc. Thousands upon thousands of dollars. Why not let people that enjoy derbying buy them and have fun with them. Most of these cars are just sitting and rotting anyway, what’s the difference is they get hauled for scrap or someone sends it off in style in a derby. I used to derby and learned most of what I know about cars because of it. It’s a good way to get younger people involved with cars and teach them things they otherwise wouldn’t learn.

Hey Gus, you’re really telling me that collectors are dying to get their hands on 4 door 71-76 gms. Get real! The derby guys are after the old family boats that have no real collector value like chevelles, camaros, corvettes etc. I’d love to see you in a derby with your little foreign car that runs like Sh*t because you left the stock engine in it while someone with a welded up 74 Impala takes it to ya! Good day!

    1. Anonymous

Maybe lots of people aren’t looking for 71-76 GM 4 doors to restore, but there are a select number of people restoring or resto-modding 2 door and convertibles. Many of the 4 door parts will interchange.

  7. kc prill

Anyone that thinks these cars are hard to find needs to find a guy around there area and ask them because we find and buy these cars all the time and will sell them at derby pricing too.58-64 fomoco $500-1500, 71-76 gm’s $500-2500, 61-69 suicide Lincolns $1000-2500, and 60s mopars $300-1200 and most of the time they are really nice rust free cars
