I am a man of simple tastes. It doesn’t take a lot to keep me happy. For instance, if I were to receive this awesome 1978 K6500 4X4 fire truck for Christmas, I’d be totally satisfied with that single gift. My kids would like it, I’d be able to help the community fight fires in the remote forests of eastern Massachusetts, and I’d promise the neighbors that no sirens would be blared between the hours of 10pm and 6am.
The truck seems to be in immaculate shape with no rust or other wear visible in the photos. The thing only has 16,500 miles on it so that means it only traveled about 485 miles per year! The firemen must have cruised it to the coffee shop or something as it sure didn’t go on many long trips through the mountains of Colorado where it is being sold.
Obviously the 4X4 part of the truck is what’s got my tongue hanging out. The Howe-Coleman company that did the conversion was around for many years and was in the same league as Marmon-Herrington and other large outfits in the same business. The big front axle is backed up by a four speed transmission (perhaps an Allison) and a Rockwell two-speed transfer case. No lightweight, the GVW is more than 25,000lbs so a CDL license would be required to tool around in it. All good there and I am so equipped. The fire-fighty stuff is cool, too. 500 GPM pump, 500 gallon water tank, 500ft of hose, 3800 watt generator. It is a man sized version of what my kids are asking Santa for! The red headlights are super boss!
