Ebay Find: This 1979 Chrysler Town And Country Wagon Is Perfection

Ebay Find: This 1979 Chrysler Town And Country Wagon Is Perfection

Just look at it. Bronze paint with the best looking fake wood offered in the Seventies. The perfect wheel/tire setup…and that’s coming from a guy that normally can’t stand Torq-Thrust style wheels. The cleanliness of the engine bay. The swapped-in 125mph cop speedometer. The dual pipes. Be still,my heart, I think I’m in love.

The Town and Country wagon version of the Chrysler LeBaron was the end-all loaded family hauler. It wasn’t particularly powerful with a 318, but it would get you there just fine, and quite comfortably. It’s size was perfect for the time, as all of Detroit’s brands were downsizing their cars. This one in particular has led a pretty easy life with a loving owner judging from it’s condition. The wood paneling shows some wear but nothing bad. The engine bay is freaking spotless. I’ve never seen an F-J-M Mopar with a cleaner 318 under the hood. The dual pipe system is a mandatory upgrade for these cars and it appears that some of the cop-spec pieces have been making their way onto the car (the speedometer is a huge hint, as that was a cop-only piece.) All of the power options work, the only other modification I see is the upgraded sound system using a newer factory deck and upgraded speakers. The only repair that seems to be needed is the headliner.

This thing is a Gear Vendors or manual transmission swap away from being a perfect Interstate cruiser. Wagons are cool when done right, and this one is right up there. It should even be plenty affordable, since most buyers underrate these Chryslers. A/C on, engine purring along as you cruise…this Town and Country will do it nicely.

Copper plating under clearcoat on those wheels would look cool — but then you’d need to do that to all of the exterior chrome…

Eeesh ! Tasteless wretched excess to the extreme . Along with being the epitome of everything that was wrong with the 70’s and American iron in particular .

The result no doubt of one too many beers .. an excess of cash [ or in this case more likely an excess of credit card bills ] and an abject lack of aesthetics .

Can it get any worse ? Unfortunately in this ever descending America … why yes it can . And probably will .

Honestly …. the only thing this needs to complete the picture is a set of long horn steer horns on the hood and a General Lee horn underneath . Tack a Confederate flag on somewhere and you’ve pretty much summed it up in a nut .. and I do mean NUT shell .

    e.g. American white trash personified

Why is it that in every comment you make here you sound like a complete whack job?
Why do you comment here? Why bother?

I’ve never understood the internet troll mentality – “I DON’T LIKE IT, SO I’M GOING TO GRANDSTAND AGAINST IT IN HATEFUL TYPED WORDS THAT I WOULD NEVER USE IF I WAS FACE TO FACE WITH SOMEONE!”

I am disappointed that Bangshift has their own such troll – I’m used to that on websites that put classic car guys like me in the same comment pool with Honda and Bimmer owners.

I’ll gladly be called white trash or redneck than be labeled an elitist, arrogant jerk like you obviously are. So a 30 year old car is a sign of “ever descending America”? I think the problem with America today are all the whiney bitches like you!

    3. 75Duster

GuitarSlinger, why do you come to this website to bash American iron?
Isn’t there a website for POMPOUS ASSHOLES like you?
And by the way DON’T YOU EVER TELL ME OR ANY OTHER BANGSHIFTER WHAT TO WRITE ON THIS FORUM!
Bangshift needs to get rid of GuitarSlinger, he is nothing more than a internet troll with NO MUSICAL TALENT.

“American white trash personified”. Wow. OK…so the station wagon, a symbol of the American family until about 1990, is white trash. Wood paneling, fake or otherwise, is white trash. Or is this another of your anti-Chrysler binges?

If you don’t like it, fine. But here’s a hint: Not everyone is going to automatically stop and start marching to the beat of your drummer. I like it, I shared it. Simple as that.

    This car rocks.

There was a similar Lebaron Wagon in the car corral at Carlisle this year – a dead stock brown one, and I was picturing all of the awesome mods I could make to it. This car is essentially modified in that way.

Keep it up, McTaggart. I’m loving this rolling commentary on interesting M Bodies for sale.

    PS: Torq Thrusts also rock.

Even though I drove them for years while the kids were growing up I’ve never been a fan of wagons. Specially wood, fake or real. But every now and again someone manages to make one look almost acceptable. This isn’t one of those times.
Take the fake wood off and it might get close.

People either love or hate wagons in my experience.
At a car show I went to the other day, I had a woman in her early-mid 60s explain to me that all wagons were terribly ugly vehicles and she would never drive one… all while standing next to my 69 Satellite wagon.

Personally, I think they’re bad ass, and I proudly drive one.

      1. 440 6Pac

Your right there. To each their own. If we all liked the same things we’d all be eating sushi and driving Kenworths.
I have a brother-in-law that would flip over this car. He’s never seen a wagon he doesn’t like. He only had one kid but still bought wagons.

Whilst perusing my local Craigslist I can across one of these fine automobiles in what I would call Country Crock Yellow, all original with like 3x,000 miles for $3500. Looks like the ad is gone so not sure if it sold or they just took it down.

  6. Tedly

Lower that sucker a couple inches, warm up that 318 or swap it for a 360, Gear Vendors OD… Hell. Yeah.

  7. ANGRYJOE

I dont love it nor do I hate it…I love wagons and most often i like wagons with wood panels…but this one is a bit much for me…still…I’d drive it…

  8. Herb

    Looks like a replacement for the car in National Lampoon’s Vacation – “you think you hate it now, wait ’til you drive it” ;-}

  9. Bob

I like it, i’m not a Mopar guy but put some nicely painted surfboards on the roof and head to the beach. Oh yea!!!

  10. derbydad276

The only thing this needs a hemi swap out of a 300 or a Charger along with the overdrive trans

Responding to the troll only validates the activity of trolling. Don’t feed the troll.
