This hot rod, with an old school small Hemi power plant, custom built frame, 1926 Dodge body, and great adjustable stance is something we would love to own. BangShift reader Rich Hintze wants to own it too, as he sent us the tip to the eBay listing for the car. While it has a ratty look to it with the body in drab color and windowless form, there’s not a lot of gimmicky weirdness that pervades many “rat rods” on this car and it sits on a nice modern chassis with provisions to make it a driveable and streetable machine. The main feature is an airbag mounted on the top of the rear end that can provide a couple inches of body lift for cruising down the road over obstacles and rough pavement. Once the car is parked, the bag can be dumped and you’re back to laying frame. That’s good thinking.
The front axle is from a 1929 Ford and uses a suicide spring setup for suspension and 11.75″ disc brakes . Those stoppers should really haul this car down nicely when combined with the big drums on the ends of the Ford 9-inch rear. The engine is a 1954 vintage 331ci Hemi. The trans is a two speed Powerflite that lived on the back of the engine when they were both installed in a New Yorker. The trans is bone stock and the engine is basically stock aside from the addition of a new carb, HEI distributor and headers. From the sounds of the ad, the guys did not pull the motor apart and rebuild it, but they did bring it back to life, flush it a couple times with new oil, and little stuff like pulling the rockers off, cleaning them and making sure the obvious stuff was in working order. The visor? That’s a huge old saw blade from a mill that the original Dodge Brothers logo was laser cut into. Neat touch without being campy or over the top.
The interior is neat. Custom made seats are what the driver and passenger sit in. The door panels and floor are made from reclaimed metal ceiling tiles from a 1930s store. The shifter is an Ed Roth monster style piece that the father/son who did the car built. We dig that too, as cartoony as it is.
While it certainly wouldn’t be Cadillac comfy on a long drive, we think that the car is boss and it is on our DO WANT list!
