Searing Red: This 1972 Mercury Montego GT Cannot Be Missed Or Mistaken!

Searing Red: This 1972 Mercury Montego GT Cannot Be Missed Or Mistaken!

It can be seen from space, day or night…that is the most eye-blistering shade or bright red I’ve seen on a car in just about ever. And that’s only one point of many that makes this 1972 Mercury Montego GT such a show-stopper. Some cars catch your gaze…this one grabs it with the ferocity of a crazed lunatic and holds on tightly, and by the time the Stockholm Syndrome starts to set in, you start to pick up the really good parts that this Mercury brings to the table, like the worked over original 429 that is now packing 521 cubic inches of Blue Oval-sourced power, or the minty fresh interior or just the simple fact that yes, a 1972 Montego managed to survive this long without being ragged to bits or left to die in a field somewhere. The upscale brother to the Ford Torino, the Montego GT was more-or-less the top-billing performance midsize Mercury (not counting the thirty or so Montego Montego GT Cyclones that were produced) and was smack-dab in between the end of the Musclecar Era and the Rise of the Broughams.

The Torino is easily remembered, the Montego not so much. But in the fastback shape, hunkered down over four-wheel discs and wheels sized to clear them, you get that hint of the sweet spot between bruiser and luxoboat that every manufacturer found at one point or another as the horsepower ratings dropped and the interiors got plusher. A ground-up resto-mod that can blind with it’s paint, this Mercury might be a rare and rarely thought of machine, but there is no way we could shut down the chance to get behind the restored rim-blow wheel just once.

I love this body style, whether it’s a Montego or a Torino. My dad was a Torino/ LTD fan back in the day, and I guess it rubbed off on me. This is a gorgeous car and one of the cleanest I’ve ever seen. Thanks for posting.
