eBay Find: A BangShifty 1978 Corvette Rear Engine Funny Car

eBay Find: A BangShifty 1978 Corvette Rear Engine Funny Car

Rear engine floppers have a unique place in drag racing history. The only guy who really did much with one in terms of success was “Big” Jim Dunn and his Dunn and Reath ‘Cuda which won the 1972 NHRA SuperNationals. John Force’s first ride was a, get this, rear engine, sidewinder, Mustang funny car. The Night Stalker struck fear into competitor’s hearts only for the erratic performances it turned in, certainly not for elapsed times! This car that we found on eBay must have some interesting history as the owner claims that the chassis was built in 1971.

We say that because history shows that the last rear engine funny cars that ran on a “high level” or at least tried to, were located overseas. That means this chassis was run and stored, which is totally rare for these cars because nearly all of them ended up wadded into a bloody mess against a wall or guardrail.

Now that we’ve scared the sweet ba-jazasus our of you, we’ll admit to wanting this car badly! It’ll only certify to 7.50s at teh strip, which in reality is fine with us because who in their right mind would want to go quicker than that knowing the history this combo has behind it!

The car needs to be finished, meaning that driver controls need to be added, along with an engine and transmission. The sheer glory that would ensue by pulling this car into the strip on an open trailer and reeling off a couple 7.50s is immesurable.
