Normally when thoughts drift to the genre of straight axle drag cars, we’re talking Willys, Henry Js, and ’55-’57 Chevrolets. Not this time though. We were tipped off to a very cool 1964 Plymouth Valiant straight axle racer that is/was for sale on eBay. The car is claimed to be an ex-racer and judging by the lettering and ancient lace paint job on the trunk, we’re buying it.
Although the auction has ended, you can still catch up with the seller at the listed e-mail address if you are hankering for a straight axle car of your own.
Like most cars of this ilk, the axle of a van, in this case a Ford was used up front. During the car’s days of drag strip combat it ran a 383ci Plymouth engine hooked to a 727 transmission. Currently there is no engine or transmission in the machine, so you’ll need to provide the gusto if you buy. The body wears the scars that most race cars own. There are odd holes drilled here and there. A little rust in the trunk, patched floor panels, some bondo in the quarters, and just enough patina to make it all perfectly right.
Sure, this isn’t the only straight axle 1964 Valiant out there, but there cannot be many! We’d jam a blown 440 mill in there, back it up with a Clutch-Flite transmission, a Dana 60, and tie it all up with a six point cage. We’d then pull hole shots until the cops cuffed and stuffed us!
The auction is over, but you can still e-mail the seller!
eBay Find: A Straight Axle 1964 Plymouth Valiant
A big block? You fools! This car BEGS for a high winding 340 or even a 273 small block which would much more likely be how you’d have seen one in the mid to late ’60’s. A real four speed, too!
I sits in a garage not running, s/b purchased by a bangshitter to do the same, just like the majority of posters bad-ass rides, parked on j-stands. Cept for Pee Pee, he’s not a car guy.
