English Guy Builds Long Truck, Authorities Ban it From English Roads

An English trucking company boss has built a “super lorry” that he claims could reduce the number of trucks on English roads by 30 percent. The only problem with the truck is that it violates English laws and is not being allowed to travel on public roads. We think this decreases its value.

Seventy-four year old Dick Denby designed the truck and commissioned its construction for his trucking company. He has taken it on the streets but each of those rides has essentially been a low-speed chase with police tailing him for the entire trip.

The truck is different because it uses two trailers joined together and comes in about 30 feet longer than a normal trailer truck for use on the roads of the UK. The extra storage space would be most helpful in transporting light, bulky cargo. The truck does not weigh too much, it is simply too long.

Denby argues that these trucks, if they are ever approved for road going use,  could reduce the number of trucks on the road by 30 percent in England. Intrestingly, the stongest opponents of this vehicle are the railroads. They claim that the trucks will steal their business and won’t be as environmentally friendly. Here’s an AP story that fills out the details of the situation.
