2014 NSRA Street Rod Nationals: From Pro Street to Pro Weird – Our Last Look At The Massive Show

2014 NSRA Street Rod Nationals: From Pro Street to Pro Weird – Our Last Look At The Massive Show

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – You know when there are this many awesome rides at an event its just really hard to capture everything you’d like to and at the same time give everyone a chance to get their pride and joy recorded for everyone on the web to see.  Most folks work hard on their rides and take care of them and even if I don’t care for some tastes, I always give credit for hard work, tenacity, and execution in making their automotive interest a reality.  Some start with bare frame rails and others might purchase a completely done ride then change up a few things to suit their tastes.  All have a place because all of us have different talents, time, and money to throw at a project.  What we all share is an appreciation for the hobby and the folks in it with us.    In this album there are a lot more cars than pictures and it was entirely on purpose.  I wanted to catch more of YOUR rides than I was doing one car at a time.  I’m not sure my approach will work, but I wanted to try something.

In this gallery you’ll find an early Chevy van,  a Hudson pick-up, more than one pro-streeter, a Henry J, and a mid-60s SWB Chevy truck running a LS mill topped with a Holley intake and a hair-dryer.  I’m not overly-fond of the LS-lemming thing going on these days, but when its neat, clean, and fits (using up an ample portion of the engine bay) then I think the swap is awesome and effective.  This truck is a great example to what I am referring.

Lastly, we stood around and spoke to the owner of a blue, pro street GTO and though I don’t remember his name, I certainly remember all he told me about the car (it’s a symptom of CRS).  He bought the car in 1975 and picked up a another donor as well.  He took the best parts of both and made one.  The car has been in its present configuration for 25 years now.  He drives it everywhere and says its super-reliable.  The blower is currently eight-percent under-driven to keep things sane and manageable.  I didn’t ask what it once had been, but I got the feeling it used to be a terror.  The motor is a 70s block with large chamber heads to keep the compression down.  The mill is backed by a TH200R4 with upgraded internals and a lockup, 2,500rpm stall.  The narrowed rear spins 4.11 gears and he says it lopes down the highway at a tad over 2,000rpm and just eats away at the miles.  He drove it 160mi one-way for this event which is the first NSRA Nats he’s brought the car to.  Yeah, the paint is 90s style, but that is when it was built and that makes it pure pro street gold in my book.  It’s tasteful, uncluttered, and not over done.  The best part is its driven and that’s the point of all this in the first place.  This is what it’s all about.
