(Words and photos by Scott Liggett) – That’s almost a headline you would hear on a cable news network. In this case, it isn’t ominous at all. In fact, it’s a annual tradition for the Central Nebraska’s Regional Airport in Grand Island. Believe it or not, there is commercial flights going in and out of this airport. But, that doesn’t mean the TSA are doing cavity searches of hot rodders.
The airport hosts a few of these cruise-in type of shows a few times a year. They not only let hot rodders take over half the airport’s parking lot, the airport’s restaurant Afternooner’s offers up great grub and cold drinks to show goers.
Our reporter, Scott Liggett, was there to capture all the goodness. Don’t think small town shows have cool cars? How about a ’69 Boss 429 Mustang, or a super rare paint Evening Orchid ’65 Corvair?
Scott was drooling over the ’66 Caprice sport coupe that was still in the hands of it’s original owner. While everyone else was ordering up big block ’66 Impala SS’s and Chevelles, this guy special ordered this luxo-barge sans anything luxurious. He checked off the boxes on the GM order form that included the 396 big block, 4 speed, and 4.56 gears. No power steering, no power brakes, or any other power things old ladies would want. Two dealers wouldn’t even place the order for him. Lee ran the Caprice at Kearney Raceway Park running low 12’s in this boat before taking his new wife on their honeymoon in it. He says that it roared at 4500 rpm the whole trip. Yikes!
